  The Lord of might from Sinai’s brow Gave forth His voice of thunder; And Israel lay on earth below, Outstretched in fear and wonder; Beneath His feet was pitchy night, And at His left hand, and His right, The rocks were rent asunder. The Lord of love, on Calvary, A meek and suffering Stranger, Upraised to heaven His languid eye, In nature’s hour of danger; For us, He bore the weight of woe, For us, He gave His blood to flow, And met His Father’s anger. The Lord of love, the Lord of might, The King of all created, Shall back return to claim His right, On clouds of glory seated; With trumpet sound and angel song, And hallelujahs loud and long, O’er death and hell defeated.

  Not to the terrors of the Lord, The tempest, fire, and smoke; Not to the thunder of that word Which God on Sinai spoke; But we are come to Sion’s hill, The city of our God, Where milder words declare His will, And spread His love abroad. Behold th’innumerable host Of angels clothed in light! Behold the spirits of the just, Whose faith is turned to sight! Behold the blessed assembly there Whose names are writ in Heav’n! And God, the Judge of all, declares Their vilest sins forgiv’n. The saints on earth and all the dead But one communion make; All join in Christ their living Head, And of His grace partake. In such society as this My weary soul would rest: The man that dwells where Jesus is Must be forever blessed.

• [Nah 1:3] Adore And Tremble, For Our God

  Adore and tremble, for our God Is a consuming fire! His jealous eyes His wrath inflame, And raise His vengeance higher. Almighty vengeance, how it burns! How bright His fury glows! Vast magazines of plagues and storms Lie treasured for his foes. Those heaps of wrath, by slow degrees, Are forced into a flame; But kindled, oh! how fierce they blaze! And rend all nature’s frame. At His approach the mountains flee, And seek a watery grave: The frighted sea makes haste away, And shrinks up every wave. Through the wide air the mighty rocks Are swift as hailstones hurled; Who dares engage His fiery rage That shakes the solid world? Yet, mighty God, Thy sovereign grace Sits regent on the throne; The refuge of Thy chosen race When wrath comes rushing down. Thy hand shall on rebellious kings A fiery tempest pour, While we beneath Thy sheltering wings Thy just revenge adore.

  “Lord, Thy glory fills the heaven; Earth is with its fullness stored; Unto Thee be glory given, Holy, holy, holy Lord!” Heaven is still with glory ringing; Earth takes up the angels’ cry, “Holy, holy, holy” singing, “Lord of Hosts, the Lord Most High.” Ever thus, in God’s high praises, Brethren, let our tongues unite, While our thought His greatness raises, And our love His gifts excite; With His seraph train before Him, With His holy Church below, Thus conspire we to adore Him, Bid we thus our anthem flow. “Lord, Thy glory fills the heaven; Earth is with its fullness stored; Unto Thee be glory given, Holy, holy, holy Lord!” Thus Thy glorious Name confessing, We adopt the angels’ cry, “Holy, holy, holy” blessing Thee, the Lord of Hosts Most High!
