Romans 1:19-20

Context
1:19 because what can be known about God is plain to them, 28  because God has made it plain to them. 1:20 For since the creation of the world his invisible attributes – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, because they are understood through what has been made. So people 29  are without excuse.

[19:1]  1 sn Psalm 19. The psalmist praises God for his self-revelation in the heavens and in the Mosaic law. The psalmist concludes with a prayer, asking the Lord to keep him from sinning and to approve of his thoughts and words.

[19:1]  2 sn God’s glory refers here to his royal majesty and power.

[19:1]  3 tn Heb “and the work of his hands the sky declares.” The participles emphasize the ongoing testimony of the heavens/sky.

[96:13]  4 tn The verbal forms in v. 13 probably describe God’s typical, characteristic behavior, though they may depict in dramatic fashion the outworking of divine judgment or anticipate a future judgment of worldwide proportions, in which case they could be translated “will judge the world.”

[96:13]  5 tn Heb “and the nations with his integrity.”

[98:3]  6 tn Heb “he remembers his loyal love and his faithfulness to the house of Israel.”

[98:3]  7 tn Heb “the deliverance of our God,” with “God” being a subjective genitive (= God delivers).

[98:9]  8 tn The verbal forms in v. 9 probably describe God’s typical, characteristic behavior, though they may depict in dramatic fashion the outworking of divine judgment or anticipate a future judgment of worldwide proportions (“will judge…”).

[103:22]  9 tn Heb “all his works,” which includes mankind.

[103:22]  10 tn Heb “places.”

[104:24]  11 tn Heb “How many [are] your works, O Lord.” In this case the Lord’s “works” are the creatures he has made, as the preceding and following contexts make clear.

[104:24]  12 tn Heb “all of them with wisdom you have made.”

[148:1]  13 sn Psalm 148. The psalmist calls upon all creation to praise the Lord, for he is the creator and sovereign king of the world.

[148:2]  14 tn Or “heavenly messengers.”

[148:2]  15 tn Heb “all his host.”

[148:3]  16 tn Heb “stars of light.”

[148:4]  17 sn The “water” mentioned here corresponds to the “waters above” mentioned in Gen 1:7. See also Ps 104:3. For a discussion of the picture envisioned by the psalmist, see L. I. J. Stadelmann, The Hebrew Conception of the World, 47.

[148:6]  18 tn Or “forever and ever.”

[148:6]  19 tn Heb “and it will not pass away.”

[148:8]  20 tn In Ps 119:83 the noun refers to “smoke,” but here, where the elements of nature are addressed, the clouds, which resemble smoke, are probably in view.

[148:8]  21 tn Heb “[that] does his word.”

[148:11]  22 tn Or “judges.”

[44:23]  23 tn Heb “acts”; NASB, NRSV “has done it”; NLT “has done this wondrous thing.”

[44:23]  24 tn Heb “lower regions.” This refers to Sheol and forms a merism with “sky” in the previous line. See Pss 63:9; 71:20.

[44:23]  25 tn Heb “O forest and all the trees in it”; NASB, NRSV “and every tree in it.”

[44:23]  26 tn Heb “redeems.” See the note at 41:14.

[44:23]  27 tn That is, by delivering Israel. Cf. NCV “showed his glory when he saved Israel”; TEV “has shown his greatness by saving his people Israel.”

[1:19]  28 tn Grk “is manifest to/in them.”

[1:20]  29 tn Grk “they”; the referent (people) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
