Psalms 77:1-2

• [Psa 77:1] To God I Cried With Mournful Voice

  To God I cried with mournful voice, I sought His gracious ear, In the sad day when troubles rose, And filled the night with fear. Sad were my days, and dark my nights, My soul refused relief; I thought on God the just and wise, But thoughts increased my grief. Still I complained, and still oppressed, My heart began to break; My God, Thy wrath forbade my rest, And kept my eyes awake. My overwhelming sorrows grew, Till I could speak no more; Then I within myself withdrew, And called Thy judgments o’er. I called back years and ancient times When I beheld Thy face; My spirit searched for secret crimes That might withhold Thy grace. I called Thy mercies to my mind Which I enjoyed before; And will the Lord no more be kind? His face appear no more? Will He for ever cast me off? His promise ever fail? Has He forgot His tender love? Shall anger still prevail? But I forbid this hopeless thought; This dark, despairing frame, Rememb’ring what Thy hand hath wrought; Thy hand is still the same. I’ll think again of all Thy ways, And talk Thy wonders o’er; Thy wonders of recovering grace, When flesh could hope no more. Grace dwells with justice on the throne; And men that love Thy Word Have in Thy sanctuary known The counsels of the Lord.

• [Psa 77:2] In Time Of Tribulation

  In time of tribulation, hear, Lord, my feeble cries; With humble supplication to Thee my spirit flies; My heart with grief is breaking, scarce can my voice complain; Mine eyes with tears kept waking, still watch and weep in vain. The days of old, in vision, bring banished bliss to view; The years of lost fruition, their joys in pangs renew; Remembered songs of gladness, through nights lone silence brought, Strike notes of deeper sadness, and stir desponding thought. Hath God cast off forever? Can time His truth impair? His tender mercy never shall I presume to share? Hath He His loving kindness shut up in endless wrath? No; this is mine own blindness, that cannot see His path. I call to recollection the years of His right hand; And, strong in His protection, again through faith I stand; Thy deeds, O Lord, are wondrous; holy are all Thy ways; The secret place of thunder shall utter forth Thy praise. Thee, with the tribes assembled, O God, the billows saw; They saw Thee, and they trembled, turned, and stood still with awe; The clouds shot hail and lightning; the earth reeled to and fro; Thy fiery pillar brightened the gulf of gloom below. Thy way is in great waters, Thy footsteps are not known; Let Adam’s sons and daughters confide in Thee alone: Through the wild sea Thou leadest Thy chosen flock of yore; Still on the waves Thou treadest, and Thy redeemed pass o’er.

• [Psa 141:1] O Kind Creator, Bow Thine Ear

  O kind Creator, bend Thine ear To mark the cry, to know the tear Before Thy throne of mercy spent In this Thy holy fast of Lent. Our hearts are open, Lord, to Thee; Thou knowest our infirmity; Pour out on all who seek Thy face Abundance of Thy pardoning grace. Our sins are many, this we know; Spare us, good Lord, Thy mercy show; And for the honor of Thy Name Our fainting souls to life reclaim. Give us the self control that springs From discipline of outward things, That fasting inward secretly The soul may purely dwell with Thee. We pray Thee, Holy Trinity, One God, unchanging Unity, That we from this our abstinence May reap the fruits of penitence.

• [Psa 141:1] O Lord, Make Haste To Hear My Cry

  O Lord, make haste to hear my cry, To Thee I call, on Thee rely. Incline to me a gracious ear, And, when I call, in mercy hear. When in the morning unto Thee I lift my voice and bring my plea, Then let my prayer as incense rise To God enthroned above the skies. When unto Thee I look and pray With lifted hands at close of day, Then as the evening sacrifice Let my request accepted rise. Guard Thou my thoughts, I Thee implore, And of my lips keep Thou the door; Nor leave my sinful heart to stray Where evil footsteps lead the way. O righteous God, Thy chastisement, Though sent through foes, in love is sent; Though grievous, it will profit me, A healing ointment it shall be. While wickedness my foes devise, To Thee my constant prayer shall rise, When their injustice is o’erthrown, My gentleness shall still be shown. Brought nigh to death and sore distressed, O Lord, my God, in Thee I rest; Forsake me not, I look to Thee, Let me Thy great salvation see. Themselves entangled in their snare, Their own defeat my foes prepare, O keep me, Lord, nor let me fall, Protect and lead me safe through all.

• [Psa 141:1] O Merciful Creator, Hear

  O merciful Creator, hear; In tender pity bow Thine ear: Accept the tearful prayer we raise In this our fast of forty days. Each heart is manifest to Thee; Thou knowest our infirmity: Repentant now we seek Thy face; Impart to us Thy pardoning grace. Our sins are manifold and sore, But spare Thou them who sin deplore; And for Thine own Name’s sake make whole The fainting and the weary soul. Grant us to mortify each sense By means of outward abstinence, That so from every stain of sin The soul may keep her fast within. Blest Three in One, and One in Three Almighty God, we pray to Thee, That Thou wouldst now vouchsafe to bless Our fast with fruits of righteousness.
