33:1 You godly ones, shout for joy because of the Lord!

It is appropriate for the morally upright to offer him praise.

and be happy because of his deliverance. ²

115:9 O Israel, trust in the Lord!

He is their deliverer ⁵  and protector. ⁶ 

Psalms 118:8-9

118:8 It is better to take shelter ⁷  in the Lord

than to trust in people.

118:9 It is better to take shelter in the Lord

than to trust in princes.

[33:1]  ¹ sn Psalm 33. In this hymn the psalmist praises the Lord as the sovereign creator and just ruler of the world who protects and vindicates those who fear him.

[35:9]  ² tn Heb “then my soul will rejoice in the Lord and be happy in his deliverance.”

[97:12]  ³ tn Heb “to his holy remembrance.” The Hebrew noun זָכַר (zakhar, “remembrance”) here refers to the name of the Lord as invoked in liturgy and praise. Cf. Pss 6:5; 30:4. The Lord’s “name” is “holy” in the sense that it is a reminder of his uniqueness and greatness.

[118:8]  ⁶ tn “Taking shelter” in the Lord is an idiom for seeking his protection. Seeking his protection presupposes and even demonstrates the subject’s loyalty to the Lord. In the psalms those who “take shelter” in the Lord are contrasted with the wicked and equated with those who love, fear, and serve the Lord (Pss 5:11-12; 31:17-20; 34:21-22).
