Psalms 35:17

35:17 O Lord, how long are you going to just stand there and watch this? ¹ 

Rescue ²  me ³  from their destructive attacks;

guard my life ⁴  from the young lions!

74:3 Hurry and look ⁵  at the permanent ruins,

and all the damage the enemy has done to the temple! ⁶

137:8 O daughter Babylon, soon to be devastated! ⁷ 

How blessed will be the one who repays you

for what you dished out to us! ⁸

[35:17]  ² tn Heb “bring back, restore.”

[35:17]  ³ tn Or “my life.”

[35:17]  ⁴ tn Heb “my only one.” The psalmist may mean that his life is precious, or that he feels isolated and alone (see Ps 22:20). The verb “guard” is supplied in the translation, because the verb “rescue” is understood by ellipsis (see the previous line).

[74:3]  ⁵ tn Heb “lift up your steps to,” which may mean “run, hurry.”

[74:3]  ⁶ tn Heb “everything [the] enemy has damaged in the holy place.”

[137:8]  ⁹ tn Heb “O devastated daughter of Babylon.” The psalmist dramatically anticipates Babylon’s demise.

[137:8]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “O the happiness of the one who repays you your wage which you paid to us.”
