Psalms 37:36

37:36 But then one passes by, and suddenly they have disappeared! ¹ 

I looked for them, but they could not be found.

Psalms 53:2

53:2 God looks down from heaven ²  at the human race, ³ 

to see if there is anyone who is wise ⁴  and seeks God. ⁵ 

[37:36]  ¹ tn Heb “and he passes by and, look, he is not [there].” The subject of the verb “passes by” is probably indefinite, referring to any passerby. Some prefer to change the form to first person, “and I passed by” (cf. NEB; note the first person verbal forms in preceding verse and in the following line).

[53:2]  ² sn The picture of the Lord looking down from heaven draws attention to his sovereignty over the world.

[53:2]  ³ tn Heb “upon the sons of man.”

[53:2]  ⁴ tn Or “acts wisely.” The Hiphil is exhibitive.

[53:2]  ⁵ tn That is, who seeks to have a relationship with God by obeying and worshiping him.
