Psalms 69:36

69:36 The descendants of his servants will inherit it,

and those who are loyal to him ¹  will live in it. ²

135:9 He performed awesome deeds ³  and acts of judgment ⁴ 

in your midst, O Egypt,

against Pharaoh and all his servants.

Psalms 135:14

135:14 For the Lord vindicates ⁵  his people,

all who take shelter in him escape punishment. ⁸ 

[69:36]  ¹ tn Heb “the lovers of his name.” The phrase refers to those who are loyal to God (cf. v. 35). See Pss 5:11; 119:132; Isa 56:6.

[69:36]  ² sn Verses 35-36 appear to be an addition to the psalm from the time of the exile. The earlier lament reflects an individual’s situation, while these verses seem to reflect a communal application of it.

[135:9]  ³ tn Or “signs” (see Ps 65:8).

[135:9]  ⁴ tn Or “portents”; “omens” (see Ps 71:7). The Egyptian plagues are alluded to here.

[135:14]  ⁵ tn Heb “judges,” but here the idea is that the Lord “judges on behalf of” his people. The imperfect verbal forms here and in the next line draw attention to the Lord’s characteristic actions.

[135:14]  ⁶ sn Verse 14 echoes Deut 32:36, where Moses affirms that God mercifully relents from fully judging his wayward people.

[34:22]  ⁷ tn Heb “redeems the life of his servants.” The Hebrew participial form suggests such deliverance is characteristic.

[34:22]  ⁸ tn “Taking shelter” in the Lord is an idiom for seeking his protection. Seeking his protection presupposes and even demonstrates the subject’s loyalty to the Lord. In the psalms those who “take shelter” in the Lord are contrasted with the wicked and equated with those who love, fear, and serve the Lord (Pss 2:12; 5:11-12; 31:19).
