[8:9]  1 tn The plural form of the title emphasizes the Lord’s absolute sovereignty.

[8:9]  2 tn Or “awesome, majestic.”

[8:9]  3 tn Heb “name,” which here stands metonymically for God’s reputation.

[8:9]  4 sn Using the poetic device of inclusio, the psalmist ends the psalm the way he began it. The concluding refrain is identical to v. 1.

[9:2]  5 tn Heb “[to] your name, O Most High.” God’s “name” refers metonymically to his divine characteristics as suggested by his name, in this case “Most High.” This divine title (עֶלְיוֹן, ’elyo/) pictures God as the exalted ruler of the universe who vindicates the innocent and judges the wicked. See especially Ps 47:2.

[22:22]  9 tn Or “brothers,” but here the term does not carry a literal familial sense. It refers to the psalmist’s fellow members of the Israelite covenant community (see v. 23).

[25:11]  13 tn Heb “name.” By forgiving the sinful psalmist, the Lord’s reputation as a merciful God will be enhanced.

[25:11]  14 sn Forgive my sin, because it is great. The psalmist readily admits his desperate need for forgiveness.

[74:7]  17 tn Heb “to the ground they desecrate the dwelling place of your name.”

[74:21]  21 sn Let the oppressed and poor praise your name! The statement is metonymic. The point is this: May the oppressed be delivered from their enemies! Then they will have ample reason to praise God’s name.

[83:16]  25 tn Heb “fill.”

[83:16]  26 tn After the preceding imperative, the prefixed verbal form with prefixed vav (ו) indicates purpose or result (“then they will seek”).

[83:16]  27 tn Heb “your name,” which stands here for God’s person.

[86:12]  29 tn Or “forever.”

[135:13]  33 tn Or “is forever.”

[135:13]  34 tn Heb “O Lord, your remembrance [is] for a generation and a generation.” See Ps 102:12.

[143:11]  37 tn Heb “name,” which here stands metonymically for God’s reputation.

[143:11]  38 tn The imperfect verbal forms in vv. 11-12a are understood as expressing the psalmist’s desire. Note the petitionary tone of vv. 7-10a.

[143:11]  39 tn Heb “by your justice bring out my life from trouble.”

[145:2]  41 tn Or, hyperbolically, “forever.”
