89:25 I will place his hand over the sea,

[89:25]  ¹ tn Some identify “the sea” as the Mediterranean and “the rivers” as the Euphrates and its tributaries. However, it is more likely that “the sea” and “the rivers” are symbols for hostile powers that oppose God and the king (see v. 9, as well as Ps 93:3-4).

[107:3]  ² tn Heb “from lands.” The word “foreign” is supplied in the translation for clarification.

[114:3]  ³ sn The psalmist recalls the crossing of the Red Sea (Exod 14:21).

[139:9]  ⁵ sn On the wings of the dawn. This personification of the “dawn” may find its roots in mythological traditions about the god Shachar, whose birth is described in an Ugaritic myth (see G. R. Driver, Canaanite Myths and Legends, 126) and who is mentioned in Isa 14:12 as the father of Helel.
