97:1 The Lord reigns!

Let the earth be happy!

Let the many coastlands rejoice!

Isaiah 49:13

Context

49:13 Shout for joy, O sky! 2 

Rejoice, O earth!

Let the mountains give a joyful shout!

For the Lord consoles his people

and shows compassion to the 3  oppressed.

Isaiah 61:11

Context

61:11 For just as the ground produces its crops

and a garden yields its produce,

so the sovereign Lord will cause deliverance 4  to grow,

and give his people reason to praise him in the sight of all the nations. 5

[97:1]  1 sn Psalm 97. The psalmist depicts the Lord as the sovereign, just king of the world who comes in power to vindicate his people.

[49:13]  2 tn Or “O heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heavens” or “sky” depending on the context.

[49:13]  3 tn Heb “his” (so KJV, NAB, NASB, NIV, NRSV).

[61:11]  4 tn Or perhaps, “righteousness,” but the context seems to emphasize deliverance and restoration (see v. 10 and 62:1).

[61:11]  5 tn Heb “and praise before all the nations.”
