The Power of the Gospel

1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. ¹ 

Romans 6:21

6:21 So what benefit ²  did you then reap ³  from those things that you are now ashamed of? For the end of those things is death.

Ephesians 5:12

5:12 For the things they do ⁴  in secret are shameful even to mention.

[6:21]  ² tn Grk “fruit.”

[6:21]  ³ tn Grk “have,” in a tense emphasizing their customary condition in the past.

[5:12]  ⁴ tn The participle τὰ…γινόμενα (ta…ginomena) usually refers to “things happening” or “things which are,” but with the following genitive phrase ὑπ᾿ αὐτῶν (Jup’ autwn), which indicates agency, the idea seems to be “things being done.” This passive construction was translated as an active one to simplify the English style.
