Romans 1:25

Context
1:25 They 1  exchanged the truth of God for a lie 2  and worshiped and served the creation 3  rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

Romans 3:4

3:4 Absolutely not! Let God be proven true, and every human being 4  shown up as a liar, 5  just as it is written: “so that you will be justified 6  in your words and will prevail when you are judged.” 7

Romans 13:4

Context
13:4 for it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be in fear, for it does not bear the sword in vain. It is God’s servant to administer retribution on the wrongdoer.

Romans 14:4

14:4 Who are you to pass judgment on another’s servant? Before his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord 32  is able to make him stand.

[1:25]  1 tn Grk “who.” The relative pronoun was converted to a personal pronoun and, because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[3:4]  4 tn Grk “every man”; but ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo") is used in a generic sense here to stress humanity rather than masculinity.

It is very telling that being “conformed” to the present world is viewed as a passive notion, for it may suggest that it happens, in part, subconsciously. At the same time, the passive could well be a “permissive passive,” suggesting that there may be some consciousness of the conformity taking place. Most likely, it is a combination of both.

[12:2]  36 sn The verb translated test and approve (δοκιμάζω, dokimazw) carries the sense of “test with a positive outcome,” “test so as to approve.”
