Motivation to Godly Conduct

13:11 And do this ³  because we know ⁴  the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers.

[11:26]  ¹ tn It is not clear whether the phrase καὶ οὕτως (kai Joutws, “and so”) is to be understood in a modal sense (“and in this way”) or in a temporal sense (“and in the end”). Neither interpretation is conclusive from a grammatical standpoint, and in fact the two may not be mutually exclusive. Some, like H. Hübner, who argue strongly against the temporal reading, nevertheless continue to give the phrase a temporal significance, saying that God will save all Israel in the end (Gottes Ich und Israel [FRLANT], 118).

[1:16]  ² sn Here the Greek refers to anyone who is not Jewish.

[13:11]  ³ tn Grk “and this,” probably referring to the command to love (13:8-10); hence, “do” is implied from the previous verses.

[13:11]  ⁴ tn The participle εἰδότες (eidotes) has been translated as a causal adverbial participle.
