4:2 For if Abraham was declared righteous ¹  by the works of the law, he has something to boast about – but not before God.

Romans 8:37

8:37 No, in all these things we have complete victory ²  through him ³  who loved us!

9:7 nor are all the children Abraham’s true descendants; rather “through Isaac will your descendants be counted.” ⁴

[8:37]  ³ tn Here the referent could be either God or Christ, but in v. 39 it is God’s love that is mentioned.

[9:7]  ³ tn Grk “be called.” The emphasis here is upon God’s divine sovereignty in choosing Isaac as the child through whom Abraham’s lineage would be counted as opposed to Ishmael.

[10:2]  ⁴ tn Grk “they have a zeal for God.”

[10:2]  ⁵ tn Grk “in accord with knowledge.”
