Revelation 20:1-3

Context
The Thousand Year Reign

20:1 Then 17  I saw an angel descending from heaven, holding 18  in his hand the key to the abyss and a huge chain. 20:2 He 19  seized the dragon – the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan – and tied him up for a thousand years. 20:3 The angel 20  then 21  threw him into the abyss and locked 22  and sealed it so that he could not deceive the nations until the one thousand years were finished. (After these things he must be released for a brief period of time.)

[72:4]  1 tn Heb “judge [for].”

[72:4]  2 tn The prefixed verbal form appears to be an imperfect, not a jussive.

[72:4]  3 tn Heb “sons.”

[52:1]  4 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

[54:14]  5 tn Heb “in righteousness [or “vindication”] you will be established.” The precise meaning of צְדָקָה (tsÿdaqah) here is uncertain. It could mean “righteousness, justice,” indicating that the city will be a center for justice. But the context focuses on deliverance, suggesting that the term means “deliverance, vindication” here.

[54:14]  6 tn Heb “Be far from oppression!” The imperative is used here in a rhetorical manner to express certainty and assurance. See GKC 324 §110.c.

[54:14]  7 tn Heb “from terror.” The rhetorical command, “be far” is understood by ellipsis here. Note the preceding context.

[54:14]  8 tn Heb “it,” i.e., the “terror” just mentioned.

[60:18]  9 tn The words “sounds of” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[60:18]  10 tn The words “sounds of” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[31:12]  11 tn Reading a Qal perfect from the root II נָהַר (nahar; so KBL 509 s.v. and HALOT 639 s.v.) rather than I נָהַר (so BDB 625 s.v.).

[28:24]  12 sn Similar language is used in reference to Israel’s adversaries in Num 33:55; Josh 23:13.

[28:24]  13 tn Heb “and there will not be for the house of Israel a brier that pricks and a thorn that inflicts pain from all the ones who surround them, the ones who scorn them.”

[28:25]  14 tn Or “reveal my holiness.” See verse 22.

[39:29]  15 sn See Ezek 11:19; 37:14.

[9:15]  16 tn Heb “their.” The pronoun was replaced by the English definite article in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[20:1]  17 tn Grk “And.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence within the narrative.

[20:1]  18 tn The word “holding” is implied. The two clauses “having the key of the abyss” and “a huge chain in his hand” can be construed in two ways: (1) both are controlled by the participle ἔχοντα (econta) and both are modified by the phrase “in his hand” – “having in his hand the key to the abyss and a huge chain.” (2) The participle ἔχοντα refers only to the key, and the phrase “in his hand” refers only to the chain – “having the key of the abyss and holding a huge chain in his hand.” Because of the stylistic tendency in Rev to use the verb ἔχω (ecw) to mean “hold (something)” and the phrase “in his hand” forming a “bracket” along with the verb ἔχω around both the phrases in question, the first option is preferred.

[20:2]  19 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[20:3]  20 tn Grk “he”; the referent (the angel introduced in v. 1) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[20:3]  21 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

[20:3]  22 tn Or “and shut.” While the lexical force of the term is closer to “shut,” it is acceptable to render the verb ἔκλεισεν (ekleisen) as “locked” here in view of the mention of the key in the previous verse.
