“Everything is lawful,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is lawful,” ¹  but not everything builds others up. ² 

“All things are lawful for me” ¹  – but not everything is beneficial. “All things are lawful for me” – but I will not be controlled by anything.

because John had repeatedly told ¹  him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” ² 

How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”

For John had repeatedly told ¹  Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” ² 

Then some Pharisees ¹  came, and to test him ²  they asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his ³  wife?” ⁴ 

and are advocating ¹  customs that are not lawful for us to accept ²  or practice, ³  since we are ⁴  Romans.”

So ¹  Jesus asked ²  the experts in religious law ³  and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath ⁴  or not?”

Then some Pharisees ¹  came to him in order to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful ²  to divorce a wife for any cause?” ³ 

Then ¹  he said to them, “Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath, or evil, to save a life or destroy it?” But they were silent.

The ¹  chief priests took the silver and said, “It is not lawful to put this into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”

A ¹  man was there who had a withered ²  hand. And they asked Jesus, ³  “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” ⁴  so that they could accuse him.

Then ¹  Jesus said to them, “I ask you, ²  is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?”

how he entered the house of God, took ¹  and ate the sacred bread, ²  which is not lawful ³  for any to eat but the priests alone, and ⁴  gave it to his companions?” ⁵ 

Is it right ¹  for us to pay the tribute tax ²  to Caesar ³  or not?”

“Suppose a man is righteous. He practices what is just and right,

Tell us then, what do you think? Is it right ¹  to pay taxes ²  to Caesar ³  or not?”

So ¹  the Pharisees ²  said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is against the law on the Sabbath?”

But some of the Pharisees ¹  said, “Why are you ²  doing what is against the law ³  on the Sabbath?”

When the wicked turns from his sin and does what is just and right, he will live because of it.
