For who is greater, the one who is seated at the table, ¹  or the one who serves? Is it not ²  the one who is seated at the table? But I am among you as one ³  who serves.

For the one who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by people. ¹ 

If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow ¹  me, and where I am, my servant will be too. ²  If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

Not so with you; ¹  instead the one who is greatest among you must become like the youngest, and the leader ²  like the one who serves. ³ 

and said to him, “Everyone ¹  serves the good wine first, and then the cheaper ²  wine when the guests ³  are drunk. You have kept the good wine until now!”

Then once more you will see that I make a distinction between ¹  the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not.

For people ¹  swear by something greater than themselves, ²  and the oath serves as a confirmation to end all dispute. ³

If your fellow Hebrew ¹  – whether male or female ²  – is sold to you and serves you for six years, then in the seventh year you must let that servant ³  go free. ⁴ 

“They will belong to me,” says the Lord who rules over all, “in the day when I prepare my own special property. ¹  I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him.

Who ever serves in the army at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Who tends a flock and does not consume its milk?

I look, but there is no one, among them there is no one who serves as an adviser, that I might ask questions and receive answers.

Whoever speaks, let it be with ¹  God’s words. ²  Whoever serves, do so with the strength ³  that God supplies, so that in everything God will be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong ⁴  the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.

Arrogance is their necklace, ¹  and violence their clothing. ² 

Today they stand firm by your decrees, for all things are your servants.

But if our unrighteousness demonstrates ¹  the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is he? ²  (I am speaking in human terms.) ³ 

He causes everyone to stop working, ¹  so that all people ²  may know ³  his work.

Certainly ¹  your angry judgment upon men will bring you praise; ²  you reveal your anger in full measure. ³ 

Because he is a hired hand and is not concerned about the sheep, ¹  he runs away. ²
