where their worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.

But I ¹  am a worm, ²  not a man; ³  people insult me and despise me. ⁴ 

If I cry ¹  to corruption, ²  ‘You are my father,’ and to the worm, ‘My Mother,’ or ‘My sister,’

how much less a mortal man, who is but a maggot ¹  – a son of man, who is only a worm!”

So God sent ¹  a worm at dawn the next day, and it attacked the little plant so that it dried up.

The womb ¹  forgets him, the worm feasts on him, no longer will he be remembered. Like a tree, wickedness will be broken down.

Don’t be afraid, despised insignificant Jacob, ¹  men of ²  Israel. I am helping you,” says the Lord, your protector, ³  the Holy One of Israel. ⁴ 

For a moth will eat away at them like clothes; a clothes moth will devour them like wool. But the vindication I provide ¹  will be permanent; the deliverance I give will last.”

“They will go out and observe the corpses of those who rebelled against me, for the maggots that eat them will not die, ¹  and the fire that consumes them will not die out. ²  All people will find the sight abhorrent.” ³ 

Together they lie down in the dust, and worms cover over them both.

You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will not drink wine or gather in grapes, because worms will eat them.

So they put it aside until the morning, just as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it.

What the gazam-locust left the ‘arbeh-locust consumed, ¹  what the ‘arbeh-locust left the yeleq-locust consumed, and what the yeleq-locust left the hasil-locust consumed! ² 

So I ¹  waste away like something rotten, ²  like a garment eaten by moths.

For some of these insinuate themselves ¹  into households and captivate weak women ²  who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions.

I will make up for the years ¹  that the ‘arbeh-locust ²  consumed your crops ³  – the yeleq-locust, the hasil-locust, and the gazam-locust – my great army ⁴  that I sent against you.

I will be like a moth to Ephraim, like wood rot ¹  to the house of Judah.

Like one who takes off a garment on a cold day, ¹  or like vinegar poured on soda, ²  so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. ³
