I will uproot your images of Asherah ¹  from your midst, and destroy your idols. ² 

“In that day,” says the Lord, “I will destroy ¹  your horses from your midst, and smash your chariots.

I will destroy the cities of your land, and tear down all your fortresses.

Lift your hand triumphantly against your adversaries; ¹  may all your enemies be destroyed! ² 

I will strike you brutally ¹  and destroy you because of your sin.

But you are the ones who will be forced to leave! ¹  For this land is not secure! ²  Sin will thoroughly destroy it! ³ 

Jerusalem, why are you ¹  now shouting so loudly? ²  Has your king disappeared? ³  Has your wise leader ⁴  been destroyed? Is this why ⁵  pain grips ⁶  you as if you were a woman in labor?

In that day people will sing this taunt song to you – they will mock you with this lament: ¹  ‘We are completely destroyed; they sell off ²  the property of my people. How they remove it from me! ³  They assign our fields to the conqueror.’ ⁴ 

All her carved idols will be smashed to pieces; all her metal cult statues will be destroyed by fire. ¹  I will make a waste heap ²  of all her images. Since ³  she gathered the metal ⁴  as a prostitute collects her wages, the idols will become a prostitute’s wages again.” ⁵ 

I will remove your idols and sacred pillars from your midst; you will no longer worship what your own hands made.

I will remove the sorcery ¹  that you practice, ²  and you will no longer have omen readers living among you. ³ 

“Get up and thresh, Daughter Zion! For I will give you iron horns; ¹  I will give you bronze hooves, and you will crush many nations.” ²  You will devote to the Lord the spoils you take from them, and dedicate their wealth to the sovereign Ruler ³  of the whole earth. ⁴
