But at his gate lay<n id="1" /> a poor man named Lazarus<n id="2" /> whose body was covered with sores,<n id="3" />

(Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.)<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Jesus told them plainly, &#8220;Lazarus has died,

When<n id="1" /> he had said this, he shouted in a loud voice,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Lazarus, come out!&#8221;

So the chief priests planned to kill Lazarus too,<n id="1" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now a certain man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.<n id="1" />

And in hell,<n id="1" /> as he was in torment,<n id="2" /> he looked up<n id="3" /> and saw Abraham far off with Lazarus at his side.<n id="4" />

(Now it was Mary who anointed the Lord with perfumed oil<n id="1" /> and wiped his feet dry with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.)<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">After he said this, he added,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.<n id="2" /> But I am going there to awaken him.&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom he<n id="1" /> had raised from the dead.

So they prepared a dinner for Jesus<n id="1" /> there. Martha<n id="2" /> was serving, and Lazarus was among those present at the table<n id="3" /> with him.

<p class="bodytext">So the crowd who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were continuing to testify about it.<n id="1" />

So<n id="1" /> he called out,<n id="2" /> &#8216;Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus<n id="3" /> to dip the tip of his finger<n id="4" /> in water and cool my tongue, because I am in anguish<n id="5" /> in this fire.&#8217;<n id="6" />

But Abraham said, &#8216;Child,<n id="1" /> remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Now a large crowd of Judeans<n id="1" /> learned<n id="2" /> that Jesus<n id="3" /> was there, and so they came not only because of him<n id="4" /> but also to see Lazarus whom he had raised from the dead.
