<t /><p class="bodytext">Then the high priest said, &#8220;Are these things true?&#8221;<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">When they had brought them, they stood them before the council,<n id="1" /> and the high priest questioned<n id="2" /> them,

At that<n id="1" /> the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near<n id="2" /> Paul<n id="3" /> to strike<n id="4" /> him on the mouth.

and he was designated<n id="1" /> by God as high priest <b><i>in the order of Melchizedeki>b>.<n id="2" />p>

So<n id="1" /> the high priest stood up and said to him, &#8220;Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?&#8221;

Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, &#8220;Why do we still need witnesses?

They<n id="1" /> brought him first to Annas, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">While this was happening,<n id="1" /> the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.<n id="2" />

Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest&#8217;s family.<n id="1" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now the high priest rose up, and all those with him (that is, the religious party of the Sadducees<n id="1" />),<n id="2" /> and they were filled with jealousy.<n id="3" />

where Jesus our forerunner entered on our behalf, since he became <b><i>a priest forever in the order of Melchizedeki>b>.<n id="1" />p>

And he did not enter to offer<n id="1" /> himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the sanctuary year after year with blood that is not his own,

Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared,<n id="1" /> &#8220;He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now<n id="2" /> you have heard the blasphemy!

Then<n id="1" /> the high priest stood up before them<n id="2" /> and asked Jesus, &#8220;Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Then one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said,<n id="1" /> &#8220;You know nothing at all!

(Now he did not say this on his own,<n id="1" /> but because he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the Jewish nation,<n id="2" />

Paul replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I did not realize,<n id="2" /> brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, &#8216;<b><i>You must not speak evil about a ruler of your peoplei>b>.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">After five days the high priest Ananias<n id="1" /> came down with some elders and an attorney<n id="2" /> named<n id="3" /> Tertullus, and they<n id="4" /> brought formal charges<n id="5" /> against Paul to the governor.

<p class="bodytext">For every high priest is taken from among the people<n id="1" /> and appointed<n id="2" /> to represent them before God,<n id="3" /> to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.

For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.
