But when John rebuked Herod<n id="1" /> the tetrarch<n id="2" /> because of Herodias, his brother&#8217;s wife,<n id="3" /> and because of all the evil deeds<n id="4" /> that he had done,

When King Herod<n id="1" /> heard this he was alarmed, and all Jerusalem with him.

<t /><p class="bodytext">At that time Herod the tetrarch<n id="1" /> heard reports about Jesus,

But when Herod heard this, he said, &#8220;John, whom I beheaded, has been raised!&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Then Herod<n id="1" /> privately summoned the wise men and determined from them when the star had appeared.

Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, he has done nothing<n id="1" /> deserving death.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">About that time King Herod<n id="1" /> laid hands on<n id="2" /> some from the church to harm them.<n id="3" />

On a day determined in advance, Herod<n id="1" /> put on his royal robes,<n id="2" /> sat down on the judgment seat,<n id="3" /> and made a speech<n id="4" /> to them.

For Herod had arrested John, bound him,<n id="1" /> and put him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip&#8217;s wife,

<p class="bodytext">But<n id="1" /> a suitable day<n id="2" /> came, when Herod gave a banquet on his birthday for his court officials, military commanders, and leaders of Galilee.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now Herod<n id="1" /> the tetrarch<n id="2" /> heard about everything that was happening, and he was thoroughly perplexed,<n id="3" /> because some people were saying that John<n id="4" /> had been raised from the dead,

Herod said, &#8220;I had John<n id="1" /> beheaded, but who is this about whom I hear such things?&#8221; So Herod wanted to learn about Jesus.<n id="2" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">At that time,<n id="1" /> some Pharisees<n id="2" /> came up and said to Jesus,<n id="3" /> &#8220;Get away from here,<n id="4" /> because Herod<n id="5" /> wants to kill you.&#8221;

Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then,<n id="1" /> dressing him in elegant clothes,<n id="2" /> Herod<n id="3" /> sent him back to Pilate.

That very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other,<n id="1" /> for prior to this they had been enemies.<n id="2" />p>

When Herod<n id="1" /> had searched<n id="2" /> for him and did not find him, he questioned<n id="3" /> the guards and commanded that they be led away to execution.<n id="4" /> Then<n id="5" /> Herod<n id="6" /> went down from Judea to Caesarea<n id="7" /> and stayed there.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now<n id="1" /> King Herod<n id="2" /> heard this, for Jesus&#8217;<n id="3" /> name had become known. Some<n id="4" /> were saying, &#8220;John the baptizer<n id="5" /> has been raised from the dead, and because of this, miraculous powers are at work in him.&#8221;

For Herod himself had sent men, arrested John, and bound him in prison on account of Herodias, his brother Philip&#8217;s wife, because Herod<n id="1" /> had married her.

because Herod stood in awe of<n id="1" /> John and protected him, since he knew that John<n id="2" /> was a righteous and holy man. When Herod<n id="3" /> heard him, he was thoroughly baffled,<n id="4" /> and yet<n id="5" /> he liked to listen to John.<n id="6" />p>

When<n id="1" /> Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform<n id="2" /> some miraculous sign.<n id="3" />
