This all happened so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled:

The ¹  chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eye is healthy, ¹  your whole body will be full of light.

But this has happened so that ¹  the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled.

If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into hell.

But if your eye is diseased, ¹  your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed with ¹  three measures ²  of flour until all the dough had risen.” ³ 

For what does it benefit a person ¹  if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?

If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away! It is better to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into hell. ¹
