Therefore fathers will eat their sons within you, Jerusalem,<n id="1" /> and sons will eat their fathers. I will execute judgments on you, and I will scatter any survivors<n id="2" /> to the winds.<n id="3" />p>

They have sex with their father&#8217;s wife within you;<n id="1" /> they violate women during their menstrual period within you.<n id="2" />

&#8220;Are you willing to pronounce judgment?<n id="1" /> Are you willing to pronounce judgment, son of man? Then confront them with the abominable practices of their fathers,

They have treated father and mother with contempt<n id="1" /> within you; they have oppressed the foreigner among you; they have wronged the orphan and the widow<n id="2" /> within you.

Then you will live in the land I gave to your fathers; you will be my people, and I will be your God.<n id="1" />

The person who sins is the one who will die. A son will not suffer<n id="1" /> for his father&#8217;s iniquity, and a father will not suffer<n id="2" /> for his son&#8217;s iniquity; the righteous person will be judged according to his righteousness, and the wicked person according to his wickedness.<n id="3" />p>

and say, &#8216;This is what the sovereign <sc>Lordsc> says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.

You are the daughter of your mother, who detested her husband and her sons, and you are the sister of your sisters who detested their husbands and their sons. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.

&#8220;What do you mean by quoting this proverb concerning the land of Israel,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;&#8216;The fathers eat sour grapesp> <p class="poetry">And the children&#8217;s teeth become numb?&#8217;<n id="1" />p>

Indeed! All lives are mine &#8211; the life of the father as well as the life of the son is mine. The one<n id="1" /> who sins will die.p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;But suppose he in turn has a son who notices all the sins his father commits, considers them, and does not follow his father&#8217;s example.<n id="1" />

refrains from wrongdoing,<n id="1" /> does not engage in usury or charge interest, carries out my regulations and follows my statutes. He will not die for his father&#8217;s iniquity;<n id="2" /> he will surely live.

As for his father, because he practices extortion, robs his brother, and does what is not good among his people, he will die for his iniquity.p>

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;&#8216;But I said to their children<n id="1" /> in the wilderness, &#8220;Do not follow the practices of your fathers; do not observe their regulations,<n id="2" /> nor defile yourselves with their idols.

I did this<n id="1" /> because they did not observe my regulations, they rejected my statutes, they desecrated my Sabbaths, and their eyes were fixed on<n id="2" /> their fathers&#8217; idols.

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;Therefore say to the house of Israel, &#8216;This is what the sovereign <sc>Lordsc> says: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers<n id="1" /> and engage in prostitution with detestable idols?

Just as I entered into judgment with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so I will enter into judgment with you, declares the sovereign <sc>Lordsc>.

Then you will know that I am the <sc>Lordsc> when I bring you to the land of Israel, to the land I swore<n id="1" /> to give to your fathers.

One<n id="1" /> commits an abominable act with his neighbor&#8217;s wife; another obscenely defiles his daughter-in-law; another violates<n id="2" /> his sister &#8211; his father&#8217;s daughter<n id="3" /> &#8211; within you.

You must divide it equally just as I vowed to give it to your forefathers;<n id="1" /> this land will be assigned as your inheritance.<n id="2" />p>
