<t /><p class="bodytext">After you have produced children and grandchildren and have been in the land a long time,<n id="1" /> if you become corrupt and make an image of any kind<n id="2" /> and do other evil things before the <sc>Lordsc> your God that enrage him,<n id="3" />

You must not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,

<p class="poetry">When the Most High<n id="1" /> gave the nations their inheritance,p> <p class="poetry">when he divided up humankind,<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">he set the boundaries of the peoples,p> <p class="poetry">according to the number of the heavenly assembly.<n id="3" />p>

<t /><p class="poetry">But the <sc>Lordsc> took note and despised themp> <p class="poetry">because his sons and daughters enraged him.p>

They include the Anakites,<n id="1" /> a numerous<n id="2" /> and tall people whom you know about and of whom it is said, &#8220;Who is able to resist the Anakites?&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;During those days the Israelites traveled from Beeroth Bene-Yaaqan<n id="1" /> to Moserah.<n id="2" /> There Aaron died and was buried, and his son Eleazar became priest in his place.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Suppose a man has two wives, one whom he loves more than the other,<n id="1" /> and they both<n id="2" /> bear him sons, with the firstborn being the child of the less loved wife.

<p class="bodytext">Fathers must not be put to death for what their children<n id="1" /> do, nor children for what their fathers do; each must be put to death for his own sin.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">This is the law that Moses set before the Israelites.<n id="1" />

<p class="poetry">His people have been unfaithful<n id="1" /> to him;p> <p class="poetry">they have not acted like his children<n id="2" /> &#8211; this is their sin.<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">They are a perverse<n id="4" /> and deceitful generation.p>

But when you come close to the Ammonites, do not harass or provoke them because I am not giving you any of the Ammonites&#8217; land as your possession; I have already given it to Lot&#8217;s descendants<n id="1" /> as their possession.p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Again, however, pay very careful attention,<n id="1" /> lest you forget the things you have seen and disregard them for the rest of your life; instead teach them to your children and grandchildren.

and that you may so revere the <sc>Lordsc> your God that you will keep all his statutes and commandments<n id="1" /> that I am giving<n id="2" /> you &#8211; you, your children, and your grandchildren &#8211; all your lives, to prolong your days.

In the day he divides his inheritance<n id="1" /> he must not appoint as firstborn the son of the favorite wife in place of the other<n id="2" /> wife&#8217;s son who is actually the firstborn.

the <sc>Lordsc> our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, along with his sons<n id="1" /> and everyone else.<n id="2" />

These are the stipulations, statutes, and ordinances that Moses spoke to the Israelites after he had brought them out of Egypt,

and you must teach<n id="1" /> them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road,<n id="2" /> as you lie down, and as you get up.

you must say to them,<n id="1" /> &#8220;We were Pharaoh&#8217;s slaves in Egypt, but the <sc>Lordsc> brought us out of Egypt in a powerful way.<n id="2" />

Be keenly aware that just as a parent disciplines his child,<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> your God disciplines you.

Teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road,<n id="1" /> as you lie down, and as you get up.
