<p class="poetry">You may feel as secure as a birdp> <p class="poetry">nesting in the cedars of Lebanon.p> <p class="poetry">But oh how you<n id="1" /> will groan<n id="2" /> when the pains of judgment come on you.p> <p class="poetry">They will be like those of a woman giving birth to a baby.<n id="3" />p>

So they pulled Jeremiah up from the cistern with ropes. Jeremiah, however, still remained confined<n id="1" /> to the courtyard of the guardhouse.p>

<p class="poetry">The people of Damascus will lose heart and turn to flee.p> <p class="poetry">Panic will grip them.p> <p class="poetry">Pain and anguish will seize themp> <p class="poetry">like a woman in labor.p>

<p class="poetry">What will you say<n id="1" /> when the <sc>Lordsc><n id="2" /> appoints as rulers over you those alliesp> <p class="poetry">that you, yourself, had actually prepared as such?<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">Then anguish and agony will grip youp> <p class="poetry">like that of a woman giving birth to a baby.<n id="4" />p>

So the officials<n id="1" /> took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern<n id="2" /> of Malkijah, one of the royal princes,<n id="3" /> that was in the courtyard of the guardhouse. There was no water in the cistern, only mud. So when they lowered Jeremiah into the cistern with ropes he sank in the mud.<n id="4" />p>

So Ebed Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasure room in the palace.<n id="1" /> He got some worn-out clothes and old rags<n id="2" /> from there and let them down by ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.

Ebed Melech<n id="1" /> called down to Jeremiah, &#8220;Put these rags and worn-out clothes under your armpits to pad the ropes.<n id="2" /> Jeremiah did as Ebed Melech instructed.<n id="3" />
