<t /><p class="bodytext">There was a young man from Bethlehem<n id="1" /> in Judah. He was a Levite who had been temporarily residing among the tribe of Judah.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">The Philistines went up and invaded<n id="1" /> Judah. They arrayed themselves for battle<n id="2" /> in Lehi.

The <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;The men of Judah should take the lead.<n id="1" /> Be sure of this! I am handing the land over to them.&#8221;<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Later the men of Judah went down to attack the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev, and the lowlands.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">Now the descendants of the Kenite, Moses&#8217; father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the City of Date Palm Trees to Arad in the desert of Judah,<n id="1" /> located in the Negev.<n id="2" /> They went and lived with the people of Judah.<n id="3" />p>

The Levite<n id="1" /> said to him, &#8220;We are traveling from Bethlehem<n id="2" /> in Judah to the remote region of the Ephraimite hill country. That&#8217;s where I&#8217;m from. I had business in Bethlehem in Judah, but now I&#8217;m heading home.<n id="3" /> But no one has invited me into their home.

The men of Judah said to their relatives, the men of Simeon,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Invade our allotted land with us and help us attack the Canaanites.<n id="2" /> Then we<n id="3" /> will go with you into your allotted land.&#8221; So the men of Simeon went with them.p>

<p class="bodytext">The men of Judah attacked,<n id="1" /> and the <sc>Lordsc> handed the Canaanites and Perizzites over to them. They killed ten thousand men at Bezek.

The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem and captured it. They put the sword to it and set the city on fire.p>

The men of Judah attacked the Canaanites living in Hebron. (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba.) They killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.

<p class="bodytext">The men of Judah went with their brothers the men of Simeon<n id="1" /> and defeated the Canaanites living in Zephath. They wiped out Zephath.<n id="2" /> So people now call the city Hormah.<n id="3" />

The men of Judah captured Gaza, Ashkelon, Ekron, and the territory surrounding each of these cities.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> was with the men of Judah. They conquered<n id="1" /> the hill country, but they could not<n id="2" /> conquer the people living in the coastal plain, because they had chariots with iron-rimmed wheels.<n id="3" />

The Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight with Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim.<n id="1" /> Israel suffered greatly.<n id="2" />p>

The men of Judah said, &#8220;Why are you attacking<n id="1" /> us?&#8221; The Philistines<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;We have come up to take Samson prisoner so we can do to him what he has done to us.&#8221;

This man left the town of Bethlehem in Judah to find another place to live. He came to the Ephraimite hill country and made his way to Micah&#8217;s house.<n id="1" />

Micah said to him, &#8220;Where do you come from?&#8221; He replied, &#8220;I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah. I am looking for a new place to live.&#8221;<n id="1" />

However, she<n id="1" /> got angry at him<n id="2" /> and went home<n id="3" /> to her father&#8217;s house in Bethlehem in Judah. When she had been there four months,

Three thousand men of Judah went down to the cave in the cliff of Etam and said to Samson, &#8220;Do you not know that the Philistines rule over us? Why have you done this to us?&#8221; He said to them, &#8220;I have only done to them what they have done to me.&#8221;

They went up and camped in Kiriath Jearim in Judah. (To this day that place is called Camp of Dan.<n id="1" /> It is west<n id="2" /> of Kiriath Jearim.)
