The man&#8217;s name was Nabal,<n id="1" /> and his wife&#8217;s name was Abigail. She was both wise<n id="2" /> and beautiful, but the man was harsh and his deeds were evil. He was a Calebite.p>

In the morning, when Nabal was sober,<n id="1" /> his wife told him about these matters. He had a stroke and was paralyzed.<n id="2" />

When he arrived in Shiloh, Eli was sitting in his chair watching by the side of<n id="1" /> the road, for he was very worried<n id="2" /> about the ark of God. As the man entered the city to give his report,<n id="3" /> the whole city cried out.p>

Don&#8217;t be concerned<n id="1" /> about the donkeys that you lost three days ago, for they have been found. Whom does all Israel desire? Is it not you, and all your father&#8217;s family?&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

My lord should not pay attention to this wicked man Nabal. He simply lives up to his name! His name means &#8216;fool,&#8217; and he is indeed foolish!<n id="1" /> But I, your servant, did not see the servants my lord sent.<n id="2" />p>

Your conscience will not be overwhelmed with guilt<n id="1" /> for having poured out innocent blood and for having taken matters into your own hands. When the <sc>Lordsc> has granted my lord success,<n id="2" /> please remember your servant.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">When Abigail went back to Nabal, he was holding a banquet in his house like that of the king. Nabal was having a good time<n id="1" /> and was very intoxicated. She told him absolutely nothing<n id="2" /> until morning&#8217;s light.

There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of searching for me through all the territory of Israel and I will escape from his hand.&#8221;p>
