So Saul<n id="1" /> crossed through the hill country of Ephraim, passing through the land of Shalisha, but they did not find them. So they crossed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then he crossed through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.p>

Saul, his son Jonathan, and the army that remained with them stayed in Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin, while the Philistines camped in Micmash.<n id="1" />

Now what do you have at your disposal?<n id="1" /> Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found.&#8221;p>

Saul himself was in the thick of the battle;<n id="1" /> the archers<n id="2" /> spotted him and wounded him severely.p>

When you enter the town, you can find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people won&#8217;t eat until he arrives, for he must bless the sacrifice. Once that happens, those who have been invited will eat. Now go on up, for<n id="1" /> this is the time when you can find him!&#8221;p>

So on the day of the battle no sword or spear was to be found in the hand of anyone in the army that was with Saul and Jonathan. No one but Saul and his son Jonathan had them.p>

Ask your own servants; they can tell you! May my servants find favor in your sight, for we have come<n id="1" /> at the time of a holiday. Please provide us &#8211; your servants<n id="2" /> and your son David &#8211; with whatever you can spare.&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

She said, &#8220;May I, your servant, find favor in your sight.&#8221; So the woman went her way and got something to eat.<n id="1" /> Her face no longer looked sad.p>

<p class="bodytext">As they were going up the ascent to the town, they met some girls coming out to draw water. They said to them, &#8220;Is this where the seer is?&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">&#8220;When these signs have taken place, do whatever your hand finds to do, for God will be with you.<n id="1" />

Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the family of Matri was chosen by lot. At last Saul son of Kish was chosen by lot. But when they looked for him, he was nowhere to be found.

He said to them, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> is witness against you, and his chosen king<n id="1" /> is witness this day, that you have not found any reason to accuse me.&#8221;<n id="2" /> They said, &#8220;He is witness!&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Samuel set out and went up from Gilgal<n id="1" /> to Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin.<n id="2" /> Saul mustered the army that remained with him; there were about six hundred men.

<p class="bodytext">A blacksmith could not be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, &#8220;This will prevent the Hebrews from making swords and spears.&#8221;

Certainly if the army had eaten some of the enemies&#8217; provisions that they came across today, would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?&#8221;p>

Then Saul sent word to Jesse saying, &#8220;Let David be my servant, for I really like him.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

He said to his servant, &#8220;Run, find the arrows that I am about to shoot.&#8221; As the servant ran, Jonathan<n id="1" /> shot the arrow beyond him.

Now if a man finds his enemy, does he send him on his way in good shape? May the <sc>Lordsc> repay you with good this day for what you have done to me.

<p class="bodytext">Then they found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David. They gave him bread to eat and water to drink.

<p class="bodytext">The next day, when the Philistines came to strip loot from the corpses, they discovered Saul and his three sons lying dead<n id="1" /> on Mount Gilboa.
