<t /><p class="bodytext">If your fellow Hebrew<n id="1" /> &#8211; whether male or female<n id="2" /> &#8211; is sold to you and serves you for six years, then in the seventh year you must let that servant<n id="3" /> go free.<n id="4" />

Everyone was supposed to free their male and female Hebrew slaves. No one was supposed to keep a fellow Judean enslaved.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">The king of Egypt said<n id="1" /> to the Hebrew midwives,<n id="2" /> one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,<n id="3" />

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;If you buy<n id="2" /> a Hebrew servant,<n id="3" /> he is to serve you for six years, but in the seventh year he will go out free<n id="4" /> without paying anything.<n id="5" />

<p class="bodytext">A fugitive<n id="1" /> came and told Abram the Hebrew.<n id="2" /> Now Abram was living by the oaks<n id="3" /> of Mamre the Amorite, the brother<n id="4" /> of Eshcol and Aner. (All these were allied by treaty<n id="5" /> with Abram.)<n id="6" />

for I really was kidnapped<n id="1" /> from the land of the Hebrews and I have done nothing wrong here for which they should put me in a dungeon.&#8221;p>

Now a young man, a Hebrew, a servant<n id="1" /> of the captain of the guards,<n id="2" /> was with us there. We told him our dreams,<n id="3" /> and he interpreted the meaning of each of our respective dreams for us.<n id="4" />

The midwives said to Pharaoh, &#8220;Because the Hebrew<n id="1" /> women are not like the Egyptian women &#8211; for the Hebrew women<n id="2" /> are vigorous; they give birth before the midwife gets to them!&#8221;<n id="3" />

opened it,<n id="1" /> and saw the child<n id="2" /> &#8211; a boy,<n id="3" /> crying!<n id="4" /> &#8211; and she felt compassion<n id="5" /> for him and said, &#8220;This is one of the Hebrews&#8217; children.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Then his sister said to Pharaoh&#8217;s daughter, &#8220;Shall I go and get<n id="1" /> a nursing woman<n id="2" /> for you from the Hebrews, so that she may nurse<n id="3" /> the child for you?&#8221;

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">In those days,<n id="2" /> when<n id="3" /> Moses had grown up, he went out to his people<n id="4" /> and observed<n id="5" /> their hard labor, and he saw an Egyptian man attacking<n id="6" /> a Hebrew man, one of his own people.<n id="7" />

When he went out<n id="1" /> the next day,<n id="2" /> there were<n id="3" /> two Hebrew men fighting. So he said to the one who was in the wrong,<n id="4" /> &#8220;Why are you attacking<n id="5" /> your fellow Hebrew?&#8221;<n id="6" />p>

Tell him, &#8216;The <sc>Lordsc>, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you to say,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Release my people, that they may serve me<n id="2" /> in the desert!&#8221; But until now<n id="3" /> you have not listened.<n id="4" />

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">Then the <sc>Lordsc> said to Moses, &#8220;Go to Pharaoh and tell him, &#8216;Thus says the <sc>Lord,sc> the God of the Hebrews, &#8220;Release my people that they may serve me!

Be strong and act like men, you Philistines, or else you will wind up serving the Hebrews the way they have served you! Act like men and fight!&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost<n id="1" /> that was at Geba and the Philistines heard about it. Then Saul alerted<n id="2" /> all the land saying, &#8220;Let the Hebrews pay attention!&#8221;

Some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan River<n id="1" /> to the land of Gad and Gilead. But Saul stayed at Gilgal; the entire army that was with him was terrified.
