Whenever the Israelites planted their crops,<n id="1" /> the Midianites, Amalekites, and the people from the east would attack them.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">The Philistines went up and invaded<n id="1" /> Judah. They arrayed themselves for battle<n id="2" /> in Lehi.

Barak summoned men from Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh. Ten thousand men followed him;<n id="1" /> Deborah went up with him as well.

As the flame went up from the altar toward the sky, the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s messenger went up in it<n id="1" /> while Manoah and his wife watched. They fell facedown<n id="2" /> to the ground.p>

The men of Judah said, &#8220;Why are you attacking<n id="1" /> us?&#8221; The Philistines<n id="2" /> said, &#8220;We have come up to take Samson prisoner so we can do to him what he has done to us.&#8221;

But when the signal, a pillar of smoke, began to rise up from the city, the Benjaminites turned around and saw the whole city going up in a cloud of smoke that rose high into the sky.<n id="1" />

When Delilah saw that he had told her his secret,<n id="1" /> she sent for<n id="2" /> the rulers of the Philistines, saying, &#8220;Come up here again, for he has told me<n id="3" /> his secret.&#8221;<n id="4" /> So the rulers of the Philistines went up to visit her, bringing the silver in their hands.

So the rulers of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings which had not been dried and they tied him up with them.

The Israelites and the men hiding in ambush had arranged a signal. When the men hiding in ambush<n id="1" /> sent up a smoke signal from the city,

<t /><p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s angelic messenger<n id="1" /> went up from Gilgal to Bokim. He said, &#8220;I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land I had solemnly promised to give to your ancestors.<n id="2" /> I said, &#8216;I will never break my agreement<n id="3" /> with you,

<p class="bodytext">The Israelites went up to Bethel<n id="1" /> and asked God,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Who should lead the charge against the Benjaminites?&#8221;<n id="3" /> The <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;Judah should lead.&#8221;

The Israelites went up and wept before the <sc>Lordsc> until evening. They asked the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;Should we<n id="1" /> again march out to fight<n id="2" /> the Benjaminites, our brothers?&#8221;<n id="3" /> The <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;Attack them!&#8221;<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">So all the Israelites, the whole army,<n id="1" /> went up to<n id="2" /> Bethel.<n id="3" /> They wept and sat there before the <sc>Lordsc>; they did not eat anything<n id="4" /> that day until evening. They offered up burnt sacrifices and tokens of peace<n id="5" /> to the <sc>Lordsc>.

The Israelites asked, &#8220;Who from all the Israelite tribes has not assembled before the <sc>Lordsc>?&#8221; They had made a solemn oath that whoever did not assemble before the <sc>Lordsc> at Mizpah must certainly be executed.<n id="1" />
