After three days the leaders went through the camp

<p class="bodytext">Joshua told the people, &#8220;Ritually consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the <sc>Lordsc> will perform miraculous deeds among you.&#8221;

Get up! Ritually consecrate the people and tell them this: &#8216;Ritually consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel says, &#8220;You are contaminated,<n id="1" /> O Israel! You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove what is contaminating you.&#8221;<n id="2" />

The stones<n id="1" /> will be a reminder to you.<n id="2" /> When your children ask someday, &#8216;Why are these stones important to you?&#8217;

The men of Israel said to the Hivites, &#8220;Perhaps you live near us.<n id="1" /> So how can we make a treaty with you?&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Three days after they made the treaty with them, the Israelites found out they were from the local area and lived nearby.<n id="1" />

<n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">Joshua summoned the Gibeonites<n id="2" /> and said to them, &#8220;Why did you trick<n id="3" /> us by saying, &#8216;We live far away from you,&#8217; when you really live nearby?<n id="4" />

But the Israelites did not conquer<n id="1" /> the Geshurites and Maacathites; Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this very day.

<p class="bodytext">The Ephraimites<n id="1" /> did not conquer the Canaanites living in Gezer. The Canaanites live among the Ephraimites to this very day and do hard labor as their servants.p>

I sent Moses and Aaron, and I struck Egypt down when I intervened in their land.<n id="1" /> Then I brought you out.

Joshua said,<n id="1" /> &#8220;Now put aside the foreign gods that are among you and submit to<n id="2" /> the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel.&#8221;p>

&#8220;Go through the camp and command the people, &#8216;Prepare your supplies, for within three days you will cross the Jordan River and begin the conquest of the land the <sc>Lordsc> your God is ready to hand over to you.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

Joshua continued,<n id="1" /> &#8220;This is how you will know the living God is among you and that he will truly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites, and Jebusites.

Yet Joshua spared<n id="1" /> Rahab the prostitute, her father&#8217;s family,<n id="2" /> and all who belonged to her. She lives in Israel<n id="3" /> to this very day because she hid the messengers Joshua sent to spy on Jericho.<n id="4" />

The Israelites are unable to stand before their enemies; they retreat because they have become subject to annihilation.<n id="1" /> I will no longer be with you,<n id="2" /> unless you destroy what has contaminated you.<n id="3" />

Joshua read aloud every commandment Moses had given<n id="1" /> before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, children, and resident foreigners who lived among them.<n id="2" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem,<n id="1" /> heard how Joshua captured Ai and annihilated it and its king as he did Jericho<n id="2" /> and its king.<n id="3" /> He also heard how<n id="4" /> the people of Gibeon made peace with Israel and lived among them.

But the Levites will not have an allotted portion among you, for their inheritance is to serve the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="1" /> Gad, Reuben, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have already received their allotted land<n id="2" /> east of the Jordan which Moses the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s servant assigned them.&#8221;p>

For the <sc>Lordsc> our God took us and our fathers out of slavery<n id="1" /> in the land of Egypt<n id="2" /> and performed these awesome miracles<n id="3" /> before our very eyes. He continually protected us as we traveled and when we passed through nations.<n id="4" />
