<p class="bodytext">The Israelites journeyed<n id="1" /> from Rameses<n id="2" /> to Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men<n id="3" /> on foot, plus their dependants.<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">Moses said, &#8220;The people around me<n id="1" /> are 600,000 on foot;<n id="2" /> but you say, &#8216;I will give them meat,<n id="3" /> that they may eat<n id="4" /> for a whole month.&#8217;

The leaders<n id="1" /> of all the people from all the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of God&#8217;s people, which numbered<n id="2" /> four hundred thousand sword-wielding foot soldiers.

<p class="bodytext">So the Philistines fought. Israel was defeated; they all ran home.<n id="1" /> The slaughter was very great; thirty thousand foot soldiers fell in battle.

<p class="bodytext">So Saul assembled<n id="1" /> the army<n id="2" /> and mustered them at Telaim. There were 200,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 men of Judah.

<p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> answered,<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;If you have raced on foot against men and they have worn you out,p> <p class="poetry">how will you be able to compete with horses?p> <p class="poetry">And if you feel secure only<n id="2" /> in safe and open country,<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">how will you manage in the thick undergrowth along the Jordan River?<n id="4" />p>

David seized from him 1,700 charioteers<n id="1" /> and 20,000 infantrymen. David cut the hamstrings of all but a hundred of the chariot horses.<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">The armies were deployed opposite each other for seven days. On the seventh day the battle began, and the Israelites killed 100,000 Syrian foot soldiers in one day.

Jehoahaz had no army left<n id="1" /> except for fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and 10,000 foot soldiers. The king of Syria had destroyed his troops<n id="2" /> and trampled on them like dust.<n id="3" />p>

The Arameans fled before Israel. David killed 7,000<n id="1" /> Aramean charioteers and 40,000 infantrymen; he also killed Shophach<n id="2" /> the commanding general.

<p class="bodytext">When the Ammonites realized that David was disgusted with them,<n id="1" /> they<n id="2" /> sent and hired 20,000 foot soldiers from Aram Beth Rehob and Aram Zobah,<n id="3" /> in addition to 1,000 men from the king of Maacah and 12,000 men from Ish-tob.<n id="4" />p>
