But Sarai was barren; she had no children.p>

<p class="bodytext">Abram said to Sarai, &#8220;Since your<n id="1" /> servant is under your authority,<n id="2" /> do to her whatever you think best.&#8221;<n id="3" /> Then Sarai treated Hagar<n id="4" /> harshly,<n id="5" /> so she ran away from Sarai.<n id="6" />p>

He said, &#8220;Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?&#8221; She replied, &#8220;I&#8217;m running away from<n id="1" /> my mistress, Sarai.&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">Then God said to Abraham, &#8220;As for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai;<n id="1" /> Sarah<n id="2" /> will be her name.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now Sarai,<n id="1" /> Abram&#8217;s wife, had not given birth to any children,<n id="2" /> but she had an Egyptian servant<n id="3" /> named Hagar.<n id="4" />

So Sarai said to Abram, &#8220;Since<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc> has prevented me from having children, have sexual relations with<n id="2" /> my servant. Perhaps I can have a family by her.&#8221;<n id="3" /> Abram did what<n id="4" /> Sarai told him.p>

As he approached<n id="1" /> Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, &#8220;Look,<n id="2" /> I know that you are a beautiful woman.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">But the <sc>Lordsc> struck Pharaoh and his household with severe diseases<n id="1" /> because of Sarai, Abram&#8217;s wife.

And Abram and Nahor took wives for themselves. The name of Abram&#8217;s wife was Sarai,<n id="1" /> and the name of Nahor&#8217;s wife was Milcah;<n id="2" /> she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.

<p class="bodytext">Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot (the son of Haran), and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram&#8217;s wife, and with them he set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. When they came to Haran, they settled there.

And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew<n id="1" /> Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired<n id="2" /> in Haran, and they left for<n id="3" /> the land of Canaan. They entered the land of Canaan.p>

<p class="bodytext">So after Abram had lived<n id="1" /> in Canaan for ten years, Sarai, Abram&#8217;s wife, gave Hagar, her Egyptian servant,<n id="2" /> to her husband to be his wife.<n id="3" />

Then Sarai said to Abram, &#8220;You have brought this wrong on me!<n id="1" /> I allowed my servant to have sexual relations with you,<n id="2" /> but when she realized<n id="3" /> that she was pregnant, she despised me.<n id="4" /> May the <sc>Lordsc> judge between you and me!&#8221;<n id="5" />p>
