<p class="bodytext">Saul&#8217;s watchmen at Gibeah in the territory of Benjamin<n id="1" /> looked on<n id="2" /> as the crowd of soldiers seemed to melt away first in one direction and then in another.<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">Then Elkanah went back home to Ramah. But the boy was serving the <sc>Lordsc> under the supervision of<n id="1" /> Eli the priest.p>

Then he ran to Eli and said, &#8220;Here I am, for you called me.&#8221; But Eli<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t call you. Go back and lie down.&#8221; So he went back and lay down.

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Samuel said, &#8220;Bring me King Agag of the Amalekites.&#8221; So Agag came to him trembling,<n id="1" /> thinking to himself,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Surely death is bitter!&#8221;<n id="3" />

<p class="bodytext">The Philistine drew steadily closer to David to attack him, while David quickly ran toward the battle line to attack the Philistine.<n id="1" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">So David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father&#8217;s family<n id="1" /> learned about it, they went down there to him.

Then Gad the prophet said to David, &#8220;Don&#8217;t stay in the stronghold. Go to the land of Judah.&#8221; So David left and went to the forest of Hereth.p>

Saul and his men went to look for him.<n id="1" /> But David was informed and went down to the rock and stayed in the desert of Maon. When Saul heard about it, he pursued David in the desert of Maon.

<p class="bodytext">So Saul stopped pursuing David and went to confront the Philistines. Therefore that place is called Sela Hammahlekoth.<n id="1" />

So Saul took three thousand select men from all Israel and went to find<n id="1" /> David and his men in the region of<n id="2" /> the rocks of the mountain goats.<n id="3" />

David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and started down<n id="1" /> the road.p>

<p class="bodytext">David promised Saul this on oath.<n id="1" /> Then Saul went to his house, and David and his men went up to the stronghold.p>

<p class="bodytext">So David went, accompanied by his six hundred men. When he came to the Wadi Besor, those who were in the rear stayed there.<n id="1" />

The <sc>Lordsc> again called, &#8220;Samuel!&#8221; So Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, &#8220;Here I am, for you called me.&#8221; But Eli<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;I didn&#8217;t call you, my son. Go back and lie down.&#8221;p>

Then the <sc>Lordsc> called Samuel a third time. So he got up and went to Eli and said, &#8220;Here I am, for you called me!&#8221; Eli then realized that it was the <sc>Lordsc> who was calling the boy.
