<p class="bodytext">Then they asked him, &#8220;Where is Sarah your wife?&#8221; He replied, &#8220;There,<n id="1" /> in the tent.&#8221;

<p class="poetry">Your wife will be like a fruitful vine<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">in the inner rooms of your house;p> <p class="poetry">your children<n id="2" /> will be like olive branches,p> <p class="poetry">as they sit all around your table.p>

So Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, &#8220;What is this<n id="1" /> you have done to me? Why didn&#8217;t you tell me that she was your wife?

Why did you say, &#8216;She is my sister,&#8217; so that I took her<n id="1" /> to be my wife?<n id="2" /> Here is your wife!<n id="3" /> Take her and go!&#8221;<n id="4" />

<p class="bodytext">Then God said to Abraham, &#8220;As for your wife, you must no longer call her Sarai;<n id="1" /> Sarah<n id="2" /> will be her name.

One of them<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;I will surely return<n id="2" /> to you when the season comes round again,<n id="3" /> and your wife Sarah will have a son!&#8221;<n id="4" /> (Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, not far behind him.<n id="5" />

<p class="poetry">But to Adam<n id="1" /> he said,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;Because you obeyed<n id="2" /> your wifep> <p class="poetry">and ate from the tree about which I commanded you,p> <p class="poetry">&#8216;You must not eat from it,&#8217;p> <p class="poetry">cursed is the ground<n id="3" /> thanks to you;<n id="4" />p> <p class="poetry">in painful toil you will eat<n id="5" /> of it all the days of your life.p>

<p class="bodytext">God said, &#8220;No, Sarah your wife is going to bear you a son, and you will name him Isaac.<n id="1" /> I will confirm my covenant with him as a perpetual<n id="2" /> covenant for his descendants after him.

<p class="bodytext">At dawn<n id="1" /> the angels hurried Lot along, saying, &#8220;Get going! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here,<n id="2" /> or else you will be destroyed when the city is judged!&#8221;<n id="3" />

So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, &#8220;She is really<n id="1" /> your wife! Why did you say, &#8216;She is my sister&#8217;?&#8221; Isaac replied, &#8220;Because I thought someone might kill me to get her.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

<p class="poetry">&#8220;Therefore this is what the <sc>Lordsc> says:p> <p class="poetry">&#8216;Your wife will become a prostitute in the streets<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">and your sons and daughters will die violently.<n id="2" />p> <p class="poetry">Your land will be given to others<n id="3" />p> <p class="poetry">and you will die in a foreign<n id="4" /> land.p> <p class="poetry">Israel will certainly be carried into exile<n id="5" /> away from its land.&#8217;&#8221;p>
