But ¹  the Levites, according to the tribe of their fathers, ²  were not numbered ³  among them.

because the tribe of the Reubenites by their families, ¹  the tribe of the Gadites by their families, and half of the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance.

“As for the sons of Merari, you are to number them by their families and by their clans.

The sons of Merari by their families were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their clans.

“Take a census ¹  of the Kohathites from among the Levites, by their families and by their clans,

“Also take a census of the Gershonites, by their clans and by their families.

So Moses and Aaron and the leaders of the community numbered the Kohathites by their families and by clans,

those of them numbered by their families, by their clans, were 2,630.

The land must be divided by lot; and they will inherit in accordance with the names of their ancestral tribes.
