how our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time,<n id="1" /> and the Egyptians treated us and our ancestors badly.<n id="2" />

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">These are the journeys of the Israelites, who went out of the land of Egypt by their divisions under the authority<n id="2" /> of Moses and Aaron.

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">Now the <sc>Lordsc><n id="2" /> spoke<n id="3" /> to Moses in the tent of meeting<n id="4" /> in the wilderness<n id="5" /> of Sinai<n id="6" /> on the first day of the second month of the second year after<n id="7" /> the Israelites<n id="8" /> departed from the land of Egypt.<n id="9" /> He said:<n id="10" />

For all the firstborn males among the Israelites are mine, both humans and animals; when I destroyed<n id="1" /> all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I set them apart for myself.

<t /><n id="1" /><p class="bodytext">The <sc>Lordsc> spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they had come out<n id="2" /> of the land of Egypt:p>

When they went up through the Negev, they<n id="1" /> came<n id="2" /> to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai,<n id="3" /> descendants of Anak, were living. (Now Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan<n id="4" /> in Egypt.)

<p class="bodytext">Moses said to the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;When the Egyptians hear<n id="1" /> it &#8211; for you brought up this people by your power from among them &#8211;

I am the <sc>Lordsc> your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the <sc>Lordsc> your God.&#8221;p>

&#8220;Number the people<n id="1" /> from twenty years old and upward, just as the <sc>Lordsc> commanded Moses and the Israelites who went out from the land of Egypt.&#8221;p>

because all the firstborn are mine. When I destroyed<n id="1" /> all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set apart for myself all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast. They belong to me. I am the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>

And all the Israelites murmured<n id="1" /> against Moses and Aaron, and the whole congregation said to them, &#8220;If only we had died<n id="2" /> in the land of Egypt, or if only we had perished<n id="3" /> in this wilderness!

They departed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the day<n id="1" /> after the Passover the Israelites went out defiantly<n id="2" /> in plain sight<n id="3" /> of all the Egyptians.

Aaron the priest ascended Mount Hor at the command<n id="1" /> of the <sc>Lordsc>, and he died there in the fortieth year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt on the first day of the fifth month.
