<p class="bodytext">But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, &#8220;The only way I will make a treaty with you is if you let me gouge out the right eye of every one of you and in so doing humiliate all Israel!&#8221;p>

<p class="bodytext">There was fierce war with the Philistines all the days of Saul. So whenever Saul saw anyone who was a warrior or a brave individual, he would conscript him.p>

So Samuel led<n id="1" /> Israel all the days of his life.

<p class="bodytext">So all the elders of Israel gathered together and approached Samuel at Ramah.

All Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba realized that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the <sc>Lordsc>.

<p class="bodytext">Then Samuel said, &#8220;Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the <sc>Lordsc> on your behalf.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">So Samuel spoke all the words of the <sc>Lordsc> to the people who were asking him for a king.

<p class="bodytext">So Samuel listened to everything the people said and then reported it to the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot.

He captured King Agag of the Amalekites alive, but he executed all Agag&#8217;s people<n id="1" /> with the sword.

So he had them stay with the king of Moab; they stayed with him the whole time<n id="1" /> that David was in the stronghold.

The Philistines assembled; they came and camped at Shunem. Saul mustered all Israel and camped at Gilboa.

<t /><p class="bodytext">The Philistines assembled all their troops<n id="1" /> at Aphek, while Israel camped at the spring that is in Jezreel.

David retrieved everything the Amalekites had taken; he<n id="1" /> also rescued his two wives.

So Saul, his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men died together that day.p>

Then Samuel said to all the people, &#8220;Do you see the one whom the <sc>Lordsc> has chosen? Indeed, there is no one like him among all the people!&#8221; All the people shouted out, &#8220;Long live the king!&#8221;p>

All the people said to Samuel, &#8220;Pray to the <sc>Lordsc> your God on behalf of us &#8211; your servants &#8211; so we won&#8217;t die, for we have added to all our sins by asking for a king.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

all their warriors set out and traveled throughout the night. They took Saul&#8217;s corpse and the corpses of his sons from the city wall of Beth Shan and went<n id="1" /> to Jabesh, where they burned them.

Now I dedicate him to the <sc>Lordsc>. From this time on he is dedicated to the <sc>Lordsc>.&#8221; Then they<n id="1" /> worshiped the <sc>Lordsc> there.p>

Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way:<n id="1" /> Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest&#8217;s attendant would come with a three-pronged fork<n id="2" /> in his hand.
