Saul proceeded to the city<n id="1" /> of Amalek, where he set an ambush<n id="2" /> in the wadi.<n id="3" />

He fought bravely, striking down the Amalekites and delivering Israel from the hand of its enemies.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">Then Saul struck down the Amalekites all the way from Havilah to<n id="1" /> Shur, which is next to Egypt.

He captured King Agag of the Amalekites alive, but he executed all Agag&#8217;s people<n id="1" /> with the sword.

David retrieved everything the Amalekites had taken; he<n id="1" /> also rescued his two wives.

<p class="bodytext">Then Saul said to Samuel, &#8220;But I have obeyed<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>! I went on the campaign<n id="2" /> the <sc>Lordsc> sent me on. I brought back King Agag of the Amalekites after exterminating the Amalekites.

Here is what the <sc>Lordsc> of hosts says: &#8216;I carefully observed how the Amalekites opposed<n id="1" /> Israel along the way when Israel<n id="2" /> came up from Egypt.

The <sc>Lordsc> sent you on a campaign<n id="1" /> saying, &#8216;Go and exterminate those sinful Amalekites! Fight against them until you<n id="2" /> have destroyed them.&#8217;

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then Samuel said, &#8220;Bring me King Agag of the Amalekites.&#8221; So Agag came to him trembling,<n id="1" /> thinking to himself,<n id="2" /> &#8220;Surely death is bitter!&#8221;<n id="3" />

So go now and strike down the Amalekites. Destroy everything that they have. Don&#8217;t spare<n id="1" /> them. Put them to death &#8211; man, woman, child, infant, ox, sheep, camel, and donkey alike.&#8217;&#8221;p>

Saul said to the Kenites, &#8220;Go on and leave! Go down from among the Amalekites! Otherwise I will sweep you away<n id="1" /> with them! After all, you were kind to all the Israelites when they came up from Egypt.&#8221; So the Kenites withdrew from among the Amalekites.p>
