<t /><p class="bodytext">Now when Abiathar son of Ahimelech had fled to David at Keilah, he had brought with him an ephod.<n id="1" />

He took his staff in his hand, picked out five smooth stones from the stream, placed them in the pouch<n id="1" /> of his shepherd&#8217;s bag, took his sling in hand, and approached the Philistine.p>

Now the priests would always treat the people in the following way:<n id="1" /> Whenever anyone was making a sacrifice, while the meat was boiling, the priest&#8217;s attendant would come with a three-pronged fork<n id="2" /> in his hand.

<p class="bodytext">So when David returned from striking down the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul. He still had the head of the Philistine in his hand.

Then an evil spirit from the <sc>Lordsc> came upon<n id="1" /> Saul. He was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, while David was playing the lyre.<n id="2" />

Will the leaders of Keilah deliver me into his hand? Will Saul come down as your servant has heard? O <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel, please inform your servant!&#8221;p> <p class="bodytext">Then the <sc>Lordsc> said, &#8220;He will come down.&#8221;

David stayed in the strongholds that were in the desert and in the hill country of the desert of Ziph. Saul looked for him all the time,<n id="1" /> but God did not deliver David<n id="2" /> into his hand.

But Jonathan had not heard about the oath his father had made the army take. He extended the end of his staff that was in his hand and dipped it in the honeycomb. When he ate it,<n id="1" /> his eyes gleamed.<n id="2" />

Then Saul said, &#8220;Scatter out among the army and say to them, &#8216;Each of you bring to me your ox and sheep and slaughter them in this spot and eat. Let our lord instruct his servants who are here before you to look for a man who knows how to play the lyre. Then whenever the evil spirit from God comes upon you, he can play the lyre<n id="1" /> and you will feel better.&#8221;<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">So whenever the spirit from God would come upon Saul, David would take his lyre and play it. This would bring relief to Saul and make him feel better. Then the evil spirit would leave him alone.<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">The next day an evil spirit from God rushed upon Saul and he prophesied within his house. Now David was playing the lyre<n id="1" /> that day. There was a spear in Saul&#8217;s hand,

<t /><p class="bodytext">But Saul found out the whereabouts of David and the men who were with him.<n id="1" /> Now Saul was sitting at Gibeah under the tamarisk tree at an elevated location with his spear in hand and all his servants stationed around him.
