The Philistines were scared because they thought that gods had come to the camp.<n id="1" /> They said, &#8220;Too bad for<n id="2" /> us! We&#8217;ve never seen anything like this!

<p class="bodytext">But this request displeased Samuel, for<n id="1" /> they said, &#8220;Give us a king to lead us.&#8221; So Samuel prayed to the <sc>Lordsc>.

But some wicked men<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;How can this man save us?&#8221; They despised him and did not even bring him a gift. But Saul said nothing about it.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">A blacksmith could not be found in all the land of Israel, for the Philistines had said, &#8220;This will prevent the Hebrews from making swords and spears.&#8221;

Achish replied to David, &#8220;I am convinced that you are as reliable<n id="1" /> as the angel of God! However, the leaders of the Philistines have said, &#8216;He must not go up with us in the battle.&#8217;

David was very upset, for the men<n id="1" /> were thinking of stoning him;<n id="2" /> each man grieved bitterly<n id="3" /> over his sons and daughters. But David drew strength from the <sc>Lordsc> his God.p>
