May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor,<n id="1" /> the gods of their father, judge between us.&#8221; Jacob took an oath by the God whom his father Isaac feared.<n id="2" />

There he set up an altar and called it &#8220;The God of Israel is God.&#8221;<n id="1" />p>

<p class="bodytext">He also said,p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;Worthy of praise is<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of Shem!p> <p class="poetry">May Canaan be the slave of Shem!<n id="2" />p>

Now I understand that<n id="1" /> you have gone away<n id="2" /> because you longed desperately<n id="3" /> for your father&#8217;s house. Yet why did you steal my gods?&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

If the God of my father &#8211; the God of Abraham, the one whom Isaac fears<n id="1" /> &#8211; had not been with me, you would certainly have sent me away empty-handed! But God saw how I was oppressed and how hard I worked,<n id="2" /> and he rebuked you last night.&#8221;p>

so that I may make you solemnly promise<n id="1" /> by the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire<n id="2" /> a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living.

He prayed, &#8220;O <sc>Lordsc>, God of my master Abraham, guide me today.<n id="1" /> Be faithful<n id="2" /> to my master Abraham.

When I came to the spring today, I prayed, &#8216;O <sc>Lordsc>, God of my master Abraham, if you have decided to make my journey successful,<n id="1" /> may events unfold as follows:<n id="2" />

<p class="bodytext">Then Jacob prayed,<n id="1" /> &#8220;O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O <sc>Lordsc>, you said<n id="2" /> to me, &#8216;Return to your land and to your relatives and I will make you prosper.&#8217;<n id="3" />

So Jacob told his household and all who were with him, &#8220;Get rid of the foreign gods you have among you.<n id="1" /> Purify yourselves and change your clothes.<n id="2" />

He said, &#8220;I am God,<n id="1" /> the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.

&#8220;The <sc>Lordsc>, the God of heaven, who took me from my father&#8217;s house and the land of my relatives,<n id="1" /> promised me with a solemn oath,<n id="2" /> &#8216;To your descendants I will give this land.&#8217; He will send his angel<n id="3" /> before you so that you may find<n id="4" /> a wife for my son from there.

saying &#8220;Praised be the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his faithful love<n id="1" /> for my master! The <sc>Lordsc> has led me<n id="2" /> to the house<n id="3" /> of my master&#8217;s relatives!&#8221;<n id="4" />p>

Then I bowed down and worshiped the <sc>Lordsc>. I praised the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me on the right path to find the granddaughter<n id="1" /> of my master&#8217;s brother for his son.

The <sc>Lordsc> appeared to him that night and said, &#8220;I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.&#8221;

and the <sc>Lordsc> stood at its top. He said, &#8220;I am the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your grandfather Abraham and the God of your father Isaac.<n id="1" /> I will give you and your descendants the ground<n id="2" /> you are lying on.

<p class="bodytext">So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods that were in their possession<n id="1" /> and the rings that were in their ears.<n id="2" /> Jacob buried them<n id="3" /> under the oak<n id="4" /> near Shechem

&#8216;Tell Joseph this: Please forgive the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.&#8217; Now please forgive the sin of the servants of the God of your father.&#8221; When this message was reported to him, Joseph wept.<n id="1" />
