There was a Benjaminite man named Kish son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah of Benjamin. He was a prominent person.

There was a man from Ramathaim Zophim, ¹  from the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah. He was the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.

The king said, “Find out whose son this boy is!”

Then Saul told his son Jonathan and all his servants to kill David. But Saul’s son Jonathan liked David very much. ¹ 

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” David replied, “I am the son of your servant Jesse in Bethlehem.” ¹ 

But Doeg the Edomite, who had stationed himself with the servants of Saul, replied, “I saw this son of Jesse come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.

However, Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He replied, “Here I am.”

Now Ahijah was carrying ¹  an ephod. He was the son of Ahitub, who was the brother of Ichabod and a son of Phineas, son of Eli, the priest of the Lord in Shiloh. The army was unaware that Jonathan had left.

Then Saul said, “Listen, son of Ahitub.” He replied, “Here I am, my lord.”

But one of the sons of Ahimelech son of Ahitub escaped and fled to David. His name was Abiathar.

But the next morning, the second day of the new moon, David’s place was still vacant. So Saul said to his son Jonathan, “Why has Jesse’s son not come to the meal yesterday or today?”

For all of you have conspired against me! No one informs me ¹  when my own son makes an agreement with this son of Jesse! Not one of you feels sorry for me or informs me that my own son has commissioned my own servant to hide in ambush against me, as is the case today!”

So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is out with the sheep.

(Now Saul had given his daughter Michal, David’s wife, to Paltiel son of Laish, who was from Gallim.)

The name of his firstborn son was Joel, and the name of his second son was Abijah. They were judges in Beer Sheba.

Then Saul said, “Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan!” ¹  Jonathan was indicated by lot.

Now when Abiathar son of Ahimelech had fled to David at Keilah, he had brought with him an ephod. ¹ 

Then Jonathan son of Saul left and went to David at Horesh. He encouraged him ¹  through God.

So David left and crossed over to King Achish son of Maoch of Gath accompanied by his six hundred men.

Kish was the father of Saul, and Ner the father of Abner was the son ¹  of Abiel.
