<p class="bodytext">But David replied to the Philistine, &#8220;You are coming against me with sword and spear and javelin. But I am coming against you in the name of the <sc>Lordsc> of hosts, the God of Israel&#8217;s armies, whom you have defied!

<p class="bodytext">Then fear overwhelmed<n id="1" /> those who were in the camp, those who were in the field, all the army in the garrison, and the raiding bands. They trembled and the ground shook. This fear was caused by God.<n id="2" />p>

So Michal lowered David through the window, and he ran away and escaped.p>

David said to Ahimelech, &#8220;Is there no sword or spear here at your disposal? I don&#8217;t have my own sword or equipment in hand due to the urgency of the king&#8217;s instructions.&#8221;p>

When the ark of the covenant of the <sc>Lordsc> arrived at the camp, all Israel shouted so loudly<n id="1" /> that the ground shook.p>

The Philistines were scared because they thought that gods had come to the camp.<n id="1" /> They said, &#8220;Too bad for<n id="2" /> us! We&#8217;ve never seen anything like this!

In this initial skirmish Jonathan and his armor bearer struck down about twenty men in an area that measured half an acre.p>

<p class="bodytext">So David and his men went to Keilah and fought the Philistines. He took away their cattle and thoroughly defeated them.<n id="1" /> David delivered the inhabitants of Keilah.p>

When someone sets out to chase you and to take your life, the life of my lord will be wrapped securely in the bag<n id="1" /> of the living by the <sc>Lordsc> your God. But he will sling away the lives of your enemies from the sling&#8217;s pocket!

<p class="bodytext">But the woman said to him, &#8220;Look, you are aware of what Saul has done; he has removed<n id="1" /> the mediums and magicians<n id="2" /> from the land! Why are you trapping me<n id="3" /> so you can put me to death?&#8221;

Year after year he used to travel the circuit of Bethel,<n id="1" /> Gilgal, and Mizpah; he used to judge Israel in all of these places.

Now the day before Saul arrived, the <sc>Lordsc> had told<n id="1" /> Samuel:

The <sc>Lordsc> said to Samuel, &#8220;Look! I am about to do something in Israel;<n id="1" /> when anyone hears about it, both of his ears will tingle.

The <sc>Lordsc> will not abandon his people because he wants to uphold his great reputation.<n id="1" /> The <sc>Lordsc> was pleased to make you his own people.

Samuel said to him, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this day and has given it to one of your colleagues who is better than you!

(One of Saul&#8217;s servants was there that day, detained before the <sc>Lordsc>. His name was Doeg the Edomite, who was in charge of Saul&#8217;s shepherds.)

Then Abigail quickly went and mounted her donkey, with five of her female servants accompanying her.<n id="1" /> She followed David&#8217;s messengers and became his wife.p>

<p class="bodytext">When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out loudly.<n id="1" /> The woman said to Saul, &#8220;Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">As Samuel was offering burnt offerings, the Philistines approached to do battle with Israel.<n id="1" /> But on that day the <sc>Lordsc> thundered loudly against the Philistines. He caused them to panic, and they were defeated by<n id="2" /> Israel.

So Saul was keeping an eye on David from that day onward.p>
