Paul replied,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I did not realize,<n id="2" /> brothers, that he was the high priest, for it is written, &#8216;<b><i>You must not speak evil about a ruler of your peoplei>b>.&#8217;&#8221;<n id="3" />p>

he said, &#8220;I will give you a hearing<n id="1" /> when your accusers arrive too.&#8221; Then<n id="2" /> he ordered that Paul<n id="3" /> be kept under guard in Herod&#8217;s palace.<n id="4" />p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">After five days the high priest Ananias<n id="1" /> came down with some elders and an attorney<n id="2" /> named<n id="3" /> Tertullus, and they<n id="4" /> brought formal charges<n id="5" /> against Paul to the governor.

At the same time he was also hoping that Paul would give him money,<n id="1" /> and for this reason he sent for Paul<n id="2" /> as often as possible<n id="3" /> and talked<n id="4" /> with him.

Paul said in his defense,<n id="1" /> &#8220;I have committed no offense<n id="2" /> against the Jewish law<n id="3" /> or against the temple or against Caesar.&#8221;<n id="4" />

When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and a violent<n id="1" /> storm continued to batter us,<n id="2" /> we finally abandoned all hope of being saved.<n id="3" />p>

Then when the sailors tried to escape from the ship and were lowering the ship&#8217;s boat into the sea, pretending<n id="1" /> that they were going to put out anchors from the bow,

and the rest were to follow,<n id="1" /> some on planks<n id="2" /> and some on pieces of the ship.<n id="3" /> And in this way<n id="4" /> all were brought safely to land.p>

When Paul had gathered a bundle of brushwood<n id="1" /> and was putting it on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened itself on his hand.

So for this reason I have asked to see you and speak with you, for I am bound with this chain because of the hope of Israel.&#8221;<n id="1" />

After there had been much debate,<n id="1" /> Peter stood up and said to them, &#8220;Brothers, you know that some time ago<n id="2" /> God chose<n id="3" /> me to preach to the Gentiles so they would hear the message<n id="4" /> of the gospel<n id="5" /> and believe.<n id="6" />

&#8220;I am a Jew,<n id="1" /> born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up<n id="2" /> in this city, educated with strictness<n id="3" /> under<n id="4" /> Gamaliel<n id="5" /> according to the law of our ancestors,<n id="6" /> and was<n id="7" /> zealous<n id="8" /> for God just as all of you are today.

To the same apostles<n id="1" /> also, after his suffering,<n id="2" /> he presented himself alive with many convincing proofs. He was seen by them over a forty-day period<n id="3" /> and spoke about matters concerning the kingdom of God.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts<n id="1" /> of the earth.&#8221;

&#8220;Brothers,<n id="1" /> the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through<n id="2" /> David concerning Judas &#8211; who became the guide for those who arrested Jesus &#8211;
