He eliminated<n id="1" /> the pagan priests whom the kings of Judah had appointed to offer sacrifices<n id="2" /> on the high places in the cities of Judah and in the area right around Jerusalem. (They offered sacrifices<n id="3" /> to Baal, the sun god, the moon god, the constellations, and all the stars in the sky.)

He removed from the entrance to the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple the statues of horses<n id="1" /> that the kings of Judah had placed there in honor of the sun god. (They were kept near the room of Nathan Melech the eunuch, which was situated among the courtyards.)<n id="2" /> He burned up the chariots devoted to the sun god.<n id="3" />

Nebuchadnezzar<n id="1" /> took from there all the riches in the treasuries of the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple and of the royal palace. He removed all the gold items which King Solomon of Israel had made for the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s temple, just as the <sc>Lordsc> had warned.

The king<n id="1" /> asked them, &#8220;Describe the appearance<n id="2" /> of this man who came up to meet you and told you these things.&#8221;

He did evil in the sight of<n id="1" /> the <sc>Lordsc>, but not to the same degree as his father and mother. He did remove the sacred pillar of Baal that his father had made.

Yet he persisted in<n id="1" /> the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who encouraged Israel to sin; he did not turn from them.<n id="2" />p>

The king of Israel said, &#8220;Oh no!<n id="1" /> Certainly the <sc>Lordsc> has summoned these three kings so that he can hand them over to the king of Moab!&#8221;

When they got up early the next morning, the sun was shining on the water. To the Moabites, who were some distance away, the water looked red like blood.

The Moabites<n id="1" /> said, &#8220;It&#8217;s blood! The kings are totally destroyed!<n id="2" /> They have struck one another down! Now, Moab, seize the plunder!&#8221;

He said, &#8220;Go and ask all your neighbors for empty containers.<n id="1" /> Get as many as you can.<n id="2" />

She told her mistress, &#8220;If only my master were in the presence of the prophet who is in Samaria!<n id="1" /> Then he would cure him of his skin disease.&#8221;p>

As one of them was felling a log, the ax head<n id="1" /> dropped into the water. He shouted, &#8220;Oh no,<n id="2" /> my master! It was borrowed!&#8221;

The prophet<n id="1" /> asked, &#8220;Where did it drop in?&#8221; When he showed him the spot, Elisha<n id="2" /> cut off a branch, threw it in at that spot, and made the ax head float.

As they approached him,<n id="1" /> Elisha prayed to the <sc>Lordsc>, &#8220;Strike these people<n id="2" /> with blindness.&#8221;<n id="3" /> The <sc>Lordsc><n id="4" /> struck them with blindness as Elisha requested.<n id="5" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Later King Ben Hadad of Syria assembled his entire army and attacked<n id="1" /> and besieged Samaria.<n id="2" />

He was still talking to them when<n id="1" /> the messenger approached<n id="2" /> and said, &#8220;Look, the <sc>Lordsc> is responsible for this disaster!<n id="3" /> Why should I continue to wait for the <sc>Lordsc> to help?&#8221;

Then the people went out and looted the Syrian camp. A seah<n id="1" /> of finely milled flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel, just as the <sc>Lordsc> had said they would.<n id="2" />p>

Now the king was talking to Gehazi, the prophet&#8217;s<n id="1" /> servant, and said, &#8220;Tell me all the great things which Elisha has done.&#8221;

But the <sc>Lordsc> was unwilling to destroy Judah. He preserved Judah for the sake of<n id="1" /> his servant David to whom he had promised a perpetual dynasty.<n id="2" />p>

<p class="bodytext">He joined Ahab&#8217;s son Joram in a battle against King Hazael of Syria at Ramoth Gilead in which the Syrians defeated Joram.
