her first husband who divorced her is not permitted to remarry<n id="1" /> her after she has become ritually impure, for that is offensive to the <sc>Lordsc>.<n id="2" /> You must not bring guilt on the land<n id="3" /> which the <sc>Lordsc> your God is giving you as an inheritance.p>

<p class="bodytext">When a man is newly married, he need not go into<n id="1" /> the army nor be obligated in any way; he must be free to stay at home for a full year and bring joy to<n id="2" /> the wife he has married.p>

You must pay his wage that very day before the sun sets, for he is poor and his life depends on it. Otherwise he will cry out to the <sc>Lordsc> against you, and you will be guilty of sin.p>

Whenever you reap your harvest in your field and leave some unraked grain there,<n id="1" /> you must not return to get it; it should go to the resident foreigner, orphan, and widow so that the <sc>Lordsc> your God may bless all the work you do.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">If brothers live together and one of them dies without having a son, the dead man&#8217;s wife must not remarry someone outside the family. Instead, her late husband&#8217;s brother must go to her, marry her,<n id="1" /> and perform the duty of a brother-in-law.<n id="2" />

You must go to the priest in office at that time and say to him, &#8220;I declare today to the <sc>Lordsc> your<n id="1" /> God that I have come into the land that the <sc>Lordsc><n id="2" /> promised<n id="3" /> to our ancestors<n id="4" /> to give us.&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">When you finish tithing all<n id="1" /> your income in the third year (the year of tithing), you must give it to the Levites, the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows<n id="2" /> so that they may eat to their satisfaction in your villages.<n id="3" />

The <sc>Lordsc> will make you the head and not the tail, and you will always end up at the top and not at the bottom, if you obey his<n id="1" /> commandments which I am urging<n id="2" /> you today to be careful to do.

<p class="bodytext">All these curses will fall on you, pursuing and overtaking you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the <sc>Lordsc> your God by keeping his commandments and statutes that he has given<n id="1" /> you.

and will secretly eat her afterbirth<n id="1" /> and her newborn children<n id="2" /> (since she has nothing else),<n id="3" /> because of the severity of the siege by which your enemy will constrict you in your villages.p>

When such a person<n id="1" /> hears the words of this oath he secretly<n id="2" /> blesses himself<n id="3" /> and says, &#8220;I will have peace though I continue to walk with a stubborn spirit.&#8221;<n id="4" /> This will destroy<n id="5" /> the watered ground with the parched.<n id="6" />

The <sc>Lordsc> will be unwilling to forgive him, and his intense anger<n id="1" /> will rage<n id="2" /> against that man; all the curses<n id="3" /> written in this scroll will fall upon him<n id="4" /> and the <sc>Lordsc> will obliterate his name from memory.<n id="5" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">&#8220;When you have experienced all these things, both the blessings and the curses<n id="1" /> I have set before you, you will reflect upon them<n id="2" /> in all the nations where the <sc>Lordsc> your God has banished you.

The <sc>Lordsc> your God will make the labor of your hands<n id="1" /> abundantly successful and multiply your children,<n id="2" /> the offspring of your cattle, and the produce of your soil. For the <sc>Lordsc> your God will once more<n id="3" /> rejoice over you to make you prosperous<n id="4" /> just as he rejoiced over your ancestors,

I declare to you this very day that you will certainly<n id="1" /> perish! You will not extend your time in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.<n id="2" />

I also call on you<n id="1" /> to love the <sc>Lordsc> your God, to obey him and be loyal to him, for he gives you life and enables you to live continually<n id="2" /> in the land the <sc>Lordsc> promised to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.&#8221;p>

Then Moses called out to Joshua<n id="1" /> in the presence of all Israel, &#8220;Be strong and courageous, for you will accompany these people to the land that the <sc>Lordsc> promised to give their ancestors,<n id="2" /> and you will enable them to inherit it.

At that time<n id="1" /> my anger will erupt against them<n id="2" /> and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome<n id="3" /> them<n id="4" /> so that they<n id="5" /> will say at that time, &#8216;Have not these disasters<n id="6" /> overcome us<n id="7" /> because our<n id="8" /> God is not among us<n id="9" />?&#8217;

For after I have brought them<n id="1" /> to the land I promised to their<n id="2" /> ancestors &#8211; one flowing with milk and honey &#8211; and they<n id="3" /> eat their fill<n id="4" /> and become fat, then they<n id="5" /> will turn to other gods and worship them; they will reject me and break my covenant.

and the <sc>Lordsc><n id="1" /> commissioned Joshua son of Nun, &#8220;Be strong and courageous, for you will take the Israelites to the land I have promised them, and I will be with you.&#8221;<n id="2" />p>
