The city and all that is in it must be set apart for the <sc>Lordsc>,<n id="1" /> except for Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house, because she hid the spies<n id="2" /> we sent.

Get up! Ritually consecrate the people and tell them this: &#8216;Ritually consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the <sc>Lordsc> God of Israel says, &#8220;You are contaminated,<n id="1" /> O Israel! You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove what is contaminating you.&#8221;<n id="2" />

At the same time the men who had taken the city came out to fight, and the men of Ai were trapped in the middle.<n id="1" /> The Israelites struck them down, leaving no survivors or refugees.

just as Moses the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s servant had commanded the Israelites. As described in the law scroll of Moses, it was made with uncut stones untouched by an iron tool.<n id="1" /> They offered burnt sacrifices on it and sacrificed tokens of peace.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem,<n id="1" /> heard how Joshua captured Ai and annihilated it and its king as he did Jericho<n id="2" /> and its king.<n id="3" /> He also heard how<n id="4" /> the people of Gibeon made peace with Israel and lived among them.

<p class="bodytext">The day the <sc>Lordsc> delivered the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua prayed to the <sc>Lordsc> before Israel:<n id="1" />p> <p class="poetry">&#8220;O sun, stand still over Gibeon!p> <p class="poetry">O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon!&#8221;p>

Then Joshua said to them, &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid and don&#8217;t panic!<n id="1" /> Be strong and brave, for the <sc>Lordsc> will do the same thing to all your enemies you fight.

from Mount Halak on up to Seir, as far as Baal Gad in the Lebanon Valley below Mount Hermon. He captured all their kings and executed them.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">At that time Joshua attacked and eliminated the Anakites from the hill country<n id="1" /> &#8211; from Hebron, Debir, Anab, and all the hill country of Judah and Israel.<n id="2" /> Joshua annihilated them and their cities.

Joshua conquered<n id="1" /> the whole land, just as the <sc>Lordsc> had promised Moses,<n id="2" /> and he assigned Israel their tribal portions.<n id="3" /> Then the land was free of war.p>

<p class="bodytext">Now these are the kings of the land whom the Israelites defeated and drove from their land<n id="1" /> on the east side of the Jordan,<n id="2" /> from the Arnon Valley to Mount Hermon, including all the eastern Arabah:p>

<t /><p class="bodytext">The following is a record of the territory assigned to the Israelites in the land of Canaan by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders.<n id="1" />

<p class="bodytext">The men of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, &#8220;You know what the <sc>Lordsc> said about you and me to Moses, the man of God, at Kadesh Barnea.<n id="1" />

Now, assign me this hill country which the <sc>Lordsc> promised me at that time! No doubt you heard at that time that the Anakites live there in large, fortified cities.<n id="1" /> But, assuming the <sc>Lordsc> is with me, I will conquer<n id="2" /> them, as the <sc>Lordsc> promised.&#8221;

<p class="bodytext">Caleb son of Jephunneh was assigned Kiriath Arba (that is Hebron) within the tribe of Judah, according to the <sc>Lordsc>&#8217;s instructions to Joshua. (Arba was the father of Anak.)<n id="1" />

They went before Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> told Moses to assign us land among our relatives.&#8221;<n id="1" /> So Joshua<n id="2" /> assigned them land among their uncles, as the <sc>Lordsc> had commanded.<n id="3" />

Within Issachar&#8217;s and Asher&#8217;s territory Manasseh was assigned Beth Shean, Ibleam, the residents of Dor, En Dor, the residents of Taanach, the residents of Megiddo,<n id="1" /> the three of Napheth,<n id="2" /> and the towns surrounding all these cities.<n id="3" />

The whole hill country<n id="1" /> will be yours; though it is a forest, you can clear it and it will be entirely yours.<n id="2" /> You can conquer the Canaanites, though they have chariots with iron-rimmed wheels and are strong.&#8221;p>

So Joshua said to the Israelites: &#8220;How long do you intend to put off occupying<n id="1" /> the land the <sc>Lordsc> God of your ancestors<n id="2" /> has given you?

<p class="bodytext">These are the land assignments which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders<n id="1" /> made by drawing lots in Shiloh before the <sc>Lordsc> at the entrance of the tent of meeting.<n id="2" /> So they finished dividing up the land.p>
