The exception is Caleb son of Jephunneh;<n id="1" /> he will see it and I will give him and his descendants the territory on which he has walked, because he has wholeheartedly followed me.&#8221;<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Then you responded to me and admitted, &#8220;We have sinned against the <sc>Lordsc>. We will now go up and fight as the <sc>Lordsc> our God has told us to do.&#8221; So you each put on your battle gear and prepared to go up to the hill country.

Do not be hostile toward them, because I am not giving you any of their land, not even a footprint, for I have given Mount Seir<n id="1" /> as an inheritance for Esau.

All along the way I, the <sc>Lordsc> your God,<n id="1" /> have blessed your every effort.<n id="2" /> I have<n id="3" /> been attentive to<n id="4" /> your travels through this great wasteland. These forty years I have<n id="5" /> been with you; you have lacked for nothing.&#8217;&#8221;p>

Now the length of time it took for us to go from Kadesh Barnea to the crossing of Wadi Zered was thirty-eight years, time for all the military men of that generation to die, just as the <sc>Lordsc> had vowed to them.

just as the descendants of Esau who live at Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for me, until I cross the Jordan to the land the <sc>Lordsc> our God is giving us.&#8221;

From Aroer,<n id="1" /> which is at the edge of Wadi Arnon (it is the city in the wadi),<n id="2" /> all the way to Gilead there was not a town able to resist us &#8211; the <sc>Lordsc> our God gave them all to us.

We captured all his cities at that time &#8211; there was not a town we did not take from them &#8211; sixty cities, all the region of Argob,<n id="1" /> the dominion of Og in Bashan.

<t /><p class="bodytext">At that time I instructed you as follows: &#8220;The <sc>Lordsc> your God has given you this land for your possession. You warriors are to cross over before your fellow Israelites<n id="1" /> equipped for battle.

You must fight<n id="1" /> until the <sc>Lordsc> gives your countrymen victory<n id="2" /> as he did you and they take possession of the land that the <sc>Lordsc> your God is giving them on the other side of the Jordan River. Then each of you may return to his own territory that I have given you.&#8221;

I also commanded Joshua at the same time, &#8220;You have seen everything the <sc>Lordsc> your God did to these two kings; he<n id="1" /> will do the same to all the kingdoms where you are going.<n id="2" />

<t /><p class="bodytext">Now, Israel, pay attention to the statutes and ordinances<n id="1" /> I am about to teach you, so that you might live and go on to enter and take possession of the land that the <sc>Lordsc>, the God of your ancestors,<n id="2" /> is giving you.

Do not add a thing to what I command you nor subtract from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the <sc>Lordsc> your God that I am delivering to<n id="1" /> you.

You have witnessed what the <sc>Lordsc> did at Baal Peor,<n id="1" /> how he<n id="2" /> eradicated from your midst everyone who followed Baal Peor.<n id="3" />

So be sure to do them, because this will testify of your wise understanding<n id="1" /> to the people who will learn of all these statutes and say, &#8220;Indeed, this great nation is a very wise<n id="2" /> people.&#8221;

<t /><p class="bodytext">Again, however, pay very careful attention,<n id="1" /> lest you forget the things you have seen and disregard them for the rest of your life; instead teach them to your children and grandchildren.

When you look up<n id="1" /> to the sky<n id="2" /> and see the sun, moon, and stars &#8211; the whole heavenly creation<n id="3" /> &#8211; you must not be seduced to worship and serve them,<n id="4" /> for the <sc>Lordsc> your God has assigned<n id="5" /> them to all the people<n id="6" /> of the world.<n id="7" />

But the <sc>Lordsc> became angry with me because of you and vowed that I would never cross the Jordan nor enter the good land that he<n id="1" /> is about to give you.<n id="2" />

Be on guard so that you do not forget the covenant of the <sc>Lordsc> your God that he has made with you, and that you do not make an image of any kind, just as he<n id="1" /> has forbidden<n id="2" /> you.

Keep his statutes and commandments that I am setting forth<n id="1" /> today so that it may go well with you and your descendants and that you may enjoy longevity in the land that the <sc>Lordsc> your God is about to give you as a permanent possession.p>
